Thanks for sharing this info Lou. A very inspiring story. I wasn't trying to criticize the drawings. It just seemed odd to me at first, but now makes perfect sense.

No problem, I was a little thrown by it when  I first saw them, but recognized the name. There was a write-up about him in the NYT last year. Apparently for many years he survived mostly by making refrigerator magnet art - which more and more people saw and eventually recognized there was genius at work. As you say, very inspiring story!

If Kato (or even better, FVM) does the CR Gevo, I'd have to get one. I'm not usually (actually, never) suckered in by stuff like this, but c'mon, it's a prototype Gevo with a can opener on the side.

I thought the initial announcement said there'd be a Penn Central one.

Maybe NS didn't want to project that sort of corporate image.

I would have loved seeing a PC heritage unit.
They must be letting Pan Am do the PC one for Pan Am Southern since PAR already has the run down equipment and corporate image.

Booo!  I was hoping for Erie black & yellow not cream & green PAX scheme.

Yeah, that's not ERIE.

After looking at all of them, I think the original NS is going to be bad-a$$ and the Interstate is going to look perfect on a modern loco.

Don't feel bad Dave, I had the exact same thought wondering why a major corporation would release the first renderings as pencil and marker drawings that looked like my kids drew them. Thanks to Lou for the back story on it. NS should tell that story as it is a great tribute.

Not sure how I feel about the paint schemes (not that my opinion matters a hoot). Old school on new school is one way to do a heritage scheme literally. But for the older railroads I think it is cool to try and predict how the New York Central (for example) paint scheme would have progressed over the years. People aren't going to be happy no matter what scheme NS use, but I thought UP created something new and fresh as opposed to just slapping the old logo on a modern loco (like we often see in model railroading).

Either way, my guess is that Kato and FVM will be in a mad race to get these out to market.

As UP released their heritage schemes, I kept thinking they were a little gaudy and weren't authentic heritage.  But they grew on me and the larger imagery fit the modern locomotives.

As I look at these renderings all lined up, I think I'm with Jamie.  There are some great lines on modern locos that just don't work with the old schemes.  Take the Erie scheme... that swoosh works great with the rounded bulldog nose of blended into the long straight sides of an E8.  That's why EMD's designers drew it up that way.

On a GEVO it looks strange.  There are no curved lines to play off the swoosh.  The scheme doesn't help highlight the no-nonsense angles of a modern comfort cab.  It just kinda falls flat.

Some work, the N-S scheme looks like it might be killer.  But some are just blah because they arn't being designed for the new locomotive.

I agree and believe that the scheme on the Southern unit will probably fail on the squarish nose of a modern freight locomotive.  It appears as if they're trying to use the Southern Crescent scheme that was really designed for the nose of a covered wagon.  However, I understand why they probably chose this green paint job: they used the black and aluminum scheme on the Savannah & Atlanta unit.

Likewise, they may have chosen the blue scheme on the N&W, because the PRR unit took the tuscan red and, let's face it, the "NW" scheme on black is pretty boring.  Maybe it's not too late and they'll decide to do the N&W in the Redbird scheme and PRR in DGLE.  However, no matter what the final designs end up being, I'm excited to see NS go to this expense to the benefit of railfans.  Hopefully, CSX will follow suit, because many of the roads that I appreciate and model tend to be CSX predecessors.

In my opinion, I'd like to see NS adopt the original NS Ry. colors as their everyday paint scheme.  The black and white modern NS (even after the thoroughbred head was added into the logo) is pretty dull.

My son has Asperger's too...high-functioning autism... etc.  He's not ******** (that's what HFA is, autism without mental retardation)... so I can't stand it when people act differently to him.  My advice... don't feel bad for criticizing Andy's artwork...  he's not a kid, he's an adult... if people started treating him like one his work would improve.

While I like where your head is at, probably won't see that happen. I had a conversation with an individual at Kleins and basically it only costs a few thousand to paint an NS loco. UP on the other hand pays upwards of fifteen grand to paint their locomotives. The cost for UP units with the US flag tipped under twenty grand.

Yeah, I'm totally in agreement with you on that, but a guy can dream, can't he?

I like most of them but am in the group that wishes the PRR was DGLE and without the 5 gold stripes.

And Dave, we can only dream that CSX will do this in RF&P, C&O, B&O, WM, SCL, ACL, etc.

I think they will work ok. Some down here aren't happy to loss of the TA&G, but I'll trade that , PC and P&WV for the CNJ N&S and Interstate.

One word though. I have it on good authority that the schemes as they are displayed may not be the final word though. Although the roads have been finalized, some of the schemes may be tinkered with.

Another word on the schemes and comments about how they would look on the GEVO's and ACE's. NS said originally that they would try and stick with the authenticity of the schems as much as possible. But they also understand that some compromises may have to be made to "make it work".
