Wwwwwooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

The coolest modern day railroading image I've ever laid eyes on. Notice the grouping of the units.

The fact that they are properly grouped by families is excellent on the part of NS. Well Done!
Now all we need is for someone to do some form of N scale re-creation of this with all the Fox Valley units once they are all out.  :D

'Course i would prefer they repaint the Pennsy unit in Brunswick Green to properly suit a loco in freight service   :x... but i've no clout as is... :(

I must say it was quite awesome down in Spencer yesterday even if the heat was unbearable. NS, Trains, and the NC Transportation Museum did an excellant job for an awesome event. Trains was nicknaming it "Dieselpalooza." NS gave out a free book written by their employees reflecting on the last 30 years and they also gave out posters of the Heritage Units drawings and they were being autographed by Andy Fletcher. The parade of Heritage units in the afternoon was definitly the highlight of the event and was awesome. Thankfully, most railfans behaved and stayed to self-created photo lines, but you did have an occasional jerk who jumped in front of people. These people were thoroughly hollared at my all. Amtrak had a Heritage Unit there as well and you could tour a Viewliner sleeper, dining car, and one of their Great Domes. My only complaint about the event was the parade would have been better in the morning for light. Instead they wasted 3 hours in the morning rolling each unit onto the turntable and spinning them. That would have been fine, if more people could see it, but the ropes around the turntable were full, their was limited space on the platform they set up, and the ropes were at the turntables edge, so you really needed a wide angle lens dpending on where you were around the turntable. It was definitly a good time even after beginning my trip from MD at 12:30AM and not getting home until 11PM. I made friends with some guys from NC who were going to send me the video they had taken. It was probably the biggest railfan event since the steam in Owosso.
Check out my website (listed under the web tag) for railfanning pictures from 32 states, D.C., and Ontario. Current locomotive count: 5772!

The NS corporate website has a very nice video to watch. Also noted that there is an App now for the smart phone users that is a locator App for all the heritage loco's.

"Heritage" feature on the iOS app is in no way a useful railfanning tool. It does not "track" the locomotives as you would expect, it only records user sightings of each locomotive that are input from the app, and is organized by locomotive only. IOW, you cannot just launch the app and have it tell you that "a heritage unit" is nearby, or on a specific line, you have to select which unit first, then it will display a map of user reports. Oh... you're given the opportunity to report a sighting by tapping a button. Like that's going to stay accurate for about a week before jerkwads start tapping false reports.

If your expectation was like mine, that it was going to be hooked up to their power planning system for real-time tracking like UP does with their steam program, think again.

I was told the NS Roadnumber Tracing phone number was deactivated because too many railfans started calling in to find out where the heritage units were. I don't think NS wants to give out live information of train locations. It's too bad the tracking wasn't arranged by upload date.
