on a related note: PRR Technical & Historical Society in their current High Line publication features the trestle and
history of the safe harbor area of the susquehanna division. i would like to get down there again for more photos.

I had gone back and forth on that, but ultimately, I like having the through hole there. It makes for a good place when I need to drill through stuff, clamp something down, etc... Since there's so much more of the door space that's not the hole, I'm not giving up too much.

The door knob hole on my workbench is at the back and I use it to run wires through. But my workbench is hard up against the wall and yours isn't.

That was my other thought about how to position it, but I've had it up front for a long time now and find it regularly useful so I kept it during this refurb.

I would use it to launch coupler springs and lose other important parts.
Although the cup holder idea is growing on me...

Actually, I have used it while cleaning. Not sure if it's better than the edge, but I've done it.

I think the small cup would only be inserted in the hole, not glued in. As a removable cup, you could put it in when you want to hold small parts, then pull it out when you have to drill a hole.

And what's wrong with drilling holes in the workbench?
