That's the reason for... actually, I think that's only the reason for one extra pair of feeders in this section.

The BXP8 is on its way though, so that'll be the next step.

You did such a good job of wiring the feeders to the underside of the rails, so can't you get the holes in the subroadbed underneath the track where those feeders will be more hidden.  I'm not convinced that ballast will hide those monster wires.

Here's what I've done when working with thicker stranded wires.  After you strip the insulation back, separate the strands into two separate groups and cut one of the groups back to the insulation, i.e., you're reducing the wire gauge to be soldered to the rail.  On a wire like you used, you could probably cut away half of the strands.  It's so short that it shouldn't affect the DCC signal or cause significant voltage drop.  For someone like me that solders to the side of the rail, it also reduces the visual impact of the feeder, which will not be a problem for you by soldering to the underside of the rail.

Found a bunch of sources saying "'60s-'70s" which isn't particularly helpful, and one source saying 1964, which is much better. Not sure if its correct, hopefully a Reading modeler can confirm it.
