Larry Haun is one of my heroes and he said that all the time...

I think we reached a point in the 1960s/70s where framing quality was pretty high... Good constrution techniques combined with good materials...

Mind you today's prefab rafters and I joists are pretty amazing.... Not to mention today's insulation, plumbing, Hvac and electrical is worlds ahead of even 30 years ago.

...but back to your point, balloon framing hammered together with 6p nails by a "master craftsman" no thanks!

My parents house was built in the 1930’s and was overbuilt structurally. 2x4 walls with 3/4 shiplap planking on both sides including all interior walls. Roof rafters were beautiful straight grained 2x10’s with no knots. Brick veneer exterior. Only issues were related to old plumbing & electrical, termite & water infiltration issues from old less effective weather proofing. But structure was very sound… survived Cat 5 direct hurricane hit despite having 4’ of water from storm surge inside.

Just the two tracks in the front. Everything else is FPO (including the PCesque track).

Looks like you're going to have the same problem that I did.  The sheets of 2" foam that I bought for my new layout were not consistent and had humps and dips.  It appears in the photo that you've got a significant hump on the other end of that consist.  I took a straightedge to find those humps (or used lightweight spackling to fill the dips) and sanded them down until flat.  In HO scale, it's bad enough; in N scale, those are going to be huge if left unaddressed.

I had the same problem with 2" blue foam.  Took a lot of fixing, but it's easy to do as long as you do it BEFORE you lay track  .

Next layout I'll try something else.

Oh yeah, I'm planning on some liberal use of my palm sander to deal with all those dips and humps.

In this case though, it's just a squiggle in the cork (which isn't even going to be under that track anyway).
