...do I ditch my Kato NYC - painted UP cars??Whadya think??
Depends on how close they are to other NYC cars that weren't included in the 20th CL set.
A business acquaintance told me that a baggage car was added to the consist when the railroad realized passengers’ luggage was too big for the roomettes.
A couple books I have show photos of the 20th C from the 60s (earliest is from 1963), with an RPO/mail storage similar to the Kato set, followed by what appears to be a stainless fluted baggage-lounge or baggage-dorm car.
What are the other NYC cars that weren't included in the 20th CL set?

I still have the original smoothside NYC add-on set, I can test the color match but I don’t know the prototype for the baggage. I doubt it’s NYC though. I did compare the current TCL RPO with the Rapido baggage, which I have in NYC TTG and is prototypical. Unfortunately there is a vast difference in the color/hue of the light gray stripe. The 20th Century Ltd did have coach cars added to it in the late '50s, so the baggage car/section could be mainly for use by the coach passengers. The Kato set is supposed to represent an early '50s consist.
