Ok thanks, John! That is the exact same width I just measured on the older Micro.

What's really crazy is I just checked the older Micro in an older Kato C44-9W shell and, while pretty snug, it does fit.

Now I'm questioning my memory, as I thought I checked if that decoder would fit in everything I had.

Hi Russ.

Not all shells have the same interior width, and even on a single shell, the interior width often varies - the sides are thinner in some spots than others.  I have a few modern diesels (the Fox Valley NS Heritage units, which are both GEVOs and SD70's), and the old Select Micro seemed to fit just fine inside these shells without sanding the shell down.

Ok, with a recent separate thread about successfully installing a V5 in a Scaletrains Dash 9, I'm back to being unclear on the width of the V5's and if they'll fit (most/many/some?) narrow-hood diesels. I've seen it mentioned that they are the exact same width as the older, (non-Direct) Micro, but I'm beginning to wonder about that. Has anyone measured both with digital calipers?

Yes, this I know.....I thought all too thoroughly. I have (apparently unclear) recall to completely ruling-out the older Micro in a number of my locos after trying to figure out if there's anywhere in the shell I could squeeze it in...somewhere. Guess I need to re-evaluate this again.

….although, I would've probably evaluated for adequate room for both the decoder AND a speaker with enclosure. May have been how I ruled it out previously (wish I took notes now).

Just as a FYI, the ESU site is now showing adapters for the Next18 plug.  Probably the most interesting is the 51993 Next18 to loose wires.  I'm sure they are the exact same as what already come with the decoders so no space savings on thickness, but could be handy if you bought the wrong decoder.

Not showing in stock at places like Streamlined Backshop or Yankee Dabbler yet but I imagine they will get there.

W.r.t. the Kato dash 9 IIRC there was a discussion on whether the 73100 would fit due to the height.  It does fit but you have to grind off inside the shell in way of the exhaust stack after filling up that area with CA glue to get the shell to snug down correctly.
I have four Kato dash 9’s, two I fitted with the 73100 and the other two with the 73800.

I did actually install a 73100 in a Kato Dash-9, having to grind-down the area of the stack as you mentioned.

Thanks reinhardtjh, but that’s a socket (female) rather than the male plug.
I want to connect another brand decoder to a loco that has the female socket in its board.

Oops.  Okay. I had to go back and check. In my mind ESU used a female socket on the decoder board but I was wrong.  Space-wise on the decoder I guess it makes sense to put the male plug there.

As far as I know, no one has a wired male plug.

Since Shane found a source of the male connectors for his adapter boards, maybe he will be willing to share the source with us?  Or if that is a secret, maybe he will be willing to sell few of those connectors to the interested Raiwire members? I'm sure it will be just a few.

Persoinally I would like to find a source of those (male and female) connectors, and their data sheet. (just for experimenting, not as a competitor to Wutter or skent).
