From the photos, it looks like the wired version is just as tall has the version which has the flex connection.
Still too tall, for most N scale locos.
The vertical height is a killer for installs.
by doing the plug socket removal ( earlier post ) I can gain about 0.100 reduction in height.
It is just a PITA to do that on a new decoder. I risk the loss of the decoder if I mess up. Poof ! there goes a C note.
still looking at how to remove the socket from the board.
I am betting we are working with a multi layered board too!

OMG! So much "It looks bigger so it sucks" attitude. It's only 4.5 mm tall the same height as a select direct micro according to sbs4dcc measurements.

Peteski...look again.  :P

Those are V5 micros.  ;)

Enjoy!

Well, between the tinyphoto, the fact that wires are coming out the same way they did on V4 micros, and me posting my reply just after waking up, I guess I missed it.   I now see  that the wires are coming out of some sort of a dongle on the decoder.

Rick,
Thanks. So would it be reasonable to assume that With the wires attached as per cut flexi/next18 connector we will need about 5mm of height in that area on an install.?
If so then this new decoder won’t fit in ALL locos we used to squeeze in a select micro or V4.

I'm still a bit confused. Isn't the not-yet-released 58820 going to be a wired version without some sort of (potentially bulky) connector on the decoder? Going by photos may be misleading as one source appears to be using the same photo for different versions.

The photos I posted (on page 6) are the 58820. Was a warranty replacement for a dead Select, sent from ESU. Guess they are clearing their “we owe xxxx a decoder” list as they are preparing the new decoders for shipment to the dealers.

Hi All,

Thanks for those posting all this updated info on the V5 Micro — it's very helpful.

Overall, I think there is one important problem that ESU are trying to address here with the V5 — namely the ability to swap out the decoder without needing to de-solder, cut wires, or install your own micro connectors. Using a detachable connector right at the decoder is very useful when removing a decoder to program via a LokProgrammer (often necessary for those using keep-alive capacitors), or when troubleshooting or returning a decoder, all without disturbing the rest of the installation wiring. It will make fault isolation to wiring or decoder very quick. No doubt it will also make ESU's life easier dealing with decoder returns — a good portion of which will have no fault found after a factory reset, and can then be re-used without costly re-wiring of a new harness.

I was just re-checking the various part numbers, and ESU provide a nice summary on their website *http://www.esu.eu/en/products/loksound/loksound-5-micro-loksound-5-micro-dcc/ that includes detailed photos of the various harnesses available (I'm attaching below for those craving more detailed pics to discuss).

The ability to fold the ribbon cable is something familiar to me from computer motherboards — and this could allow for some creative installations (the folded cable thickness is negligible).

From my perspective we are trading 0.5mm thickness for replicability, and I think with some careful selection of wiring harness, most of us will be able to achieve what we need with the new V5 (worst-case with fractionally more milling).

Steve,

No. I don’t think we will add too much extra height, unless our soldering of wires onto the pads isn’t very clean. But this is going to be a tight squeeze as is (@Jbub, check the photos, the new decoder is definitely thicker).

Yes, according to your measurements .5mm to be exact. I'm just pointing out that the v5 as you measured it is the same thickness as the select direct micro 73100 at 4.5mm. Everyone was super happy with that decoder because it was narrower than a regular v5 or select. The only install I saw where the thickness was a problem was on a modern diesel where a cap was too thick

Please gents, help me understand..

How many manufacturers of US diesels put a 6 or 8 pin in the unit?  I have no experience with BLI or Scale Trains, but the only mnfgr. is FVM that I can think of. How close am I to correct?

Thanks in advance,
Carl

Jbub, the V5 decoder I am measuring is an replacement for the Select Micro, not an direct decoder.
When you look at the new V5 micro version, it has components on one end and the plug/socket on the other end.
This makes the total thickness about the same on both ends. Some times you can mount a decoder so the thick end can be mounted so it does not present a clearance problem. With both ends being about the same, really limits the mounting to gain clearance.

I think that's it.  As far as I know it's:

FVM                 - 6-pin diesels - Not sure about the Hiawatha 4-6-2
Scaletrains       - Next18
Walthers 0-8-0 - 8-pin NMRA

Atlas               - ESU 73199
Intermountain - ESU 73199

Rapido            - ESU various

Kato                - ESU V4/V5 wired (whatever Kelley can fit, I think)

    Bachmann - Soundtrax Econami/"Sound Value"
    Athearn - Soundtraxx

Does their own thing:
    BLI - Paragon 2/3

The 58813, the one showed by @nightmare0331 is a multi-protocol one mostly for the European market.  The NMRA DCC only version only come in the Next18 (58828) and the Next18 with the flat, flex ribbon (58820) as showed by @RBrodzinsky.  The 58813, due to the multi-protocol is probably about $10 more (estimate based on the other Multi-protocol decoders) but a Google search finds them only in European hobby shops.  Bryan at SSBS doesn't list them, nor does Tony's Trains or any other store I could find in a quick glance.  There is also a 58821 but I think that's still a Next18 decoder plugged into the AT style board used in a lot of HO engines.

I think that's it.  As far as I know it's:

FVM                 - 6-pin diesels -
FVM Hiawatha 4-6-2     - 8-pin (actually 10-pin) in the tender

Scaletrains       - Next18
Walthers 0-8-0 - 8-pin NMRA

Atlas               - ESU 73199
Intermountain - ESU 73199

Arnold  -SW1 6-pin
Arnold   -U25C 6-pin

Added info in red.

For sound installs (and most non-sound installs) I ignore (sometimes remove) the interfece connector and wire the decoder in directly.

I also recommend reading this web page for the Next18 overview (there are 2 flavors of Next18)!

We need something like this:

With a wire harness connecting to the other end of the ribbon cable.

Why couldn't they have narrowed the board a bit? Sigh...
