I received my T1 yesterday from Model Trainstuff  (Free Shipping!).  After one loop around the layout (about 5 minutes) I ran it through the speed trap with my Digitrax DT 402R on speed step 1 and clocked 5.2 smph and it isn't even broken in yet.  Have to agree with the earlier poster about running like a Swiss watch.

I don't want to perpetuate the off-topic Ken-bashing thread drift but I have spoken with him at 2-3 shows and came away with a positive vibe.

What were the failures with the Bachmann K4?  I don't have one, but am thinking of purchasing one in the near future.

I've heard of several issues, from toasted decoders to thrown valve gear.  But I also don't want to suggest these are common issues either...  Like I said, mine were champs the entire time I had a place to run them and like most things, there's a "confirmation bias" to the sample set.  Like drug side effects, you hear about them when they occur and not when they don't.

If you really wanted to get fancy, in proto photos you can see the backup framing for the grille in a sort of H formation.  So maybe the mesh over a few styrene strips, and then paint the flat spot in the area from the factory a flat black.

Kudos to BLI for bringing this product to fruition.  I am hoping that they will bring out more Pennsy N scale steam.

I have never used these for screen material before but.... year ago, after my daughter-- who likes all things related to teas....

I saw she had this....



Notice the tea bag is a clear-ish pyramid.

This appears to be a different brand, but notice this is a better shot.



Buy this for your wife.    Then fix her a nice cup of tea- she will be impressed at how thoughtful you are.

After she drinks the tea, get the bag and cut the bag open. 
Throw away tea leaves, wash, dry.

It appears to be a very very fine nylon mesh. 
I always thought you might be able to airbrush it and use it for ultra fine screen material.

One of my early comments was about the loco slowing to almost a stop when throttled down quickly, well a note to tech support helped educate me to a neat feature "throttle down on breaking" (CV 244 = 6).  With this feature turned on the loco will preform as I saw, turning it off CV 244 = 54 causes the loco to glide to the new throttle setting.

Excellent Tech Support for a some what obscure issue.

I suppose we can forgive the front grill, it would be hidden by the leading K4 helper, as it runs around the Horseshoe curve loop layout..    Cause that's what all PRR modelers do right?

(Joking.. ) It does look nice overall.
