Weekend Update 1/3/16

Taking a cue from M.C. on Ardmore Oil. Used a rattle can top and Walthers tanks, along with
piping and ladders I found for $1 at OKC show. Moved out the loading ramp and put tank
farm in it's place. Will fence in with wedding ribbon mesh for chain link and use M.C's technique
for building chain link fence. Pipe elbows came from left over sprues. Backdrop picture will
move down the backdrop a bit. Too close to the oil tanks.

Nice, Chuck. Tanks for posting.  Unfortunately Krylon put those gripper indents in their tops, but Wally World spray bomb tips still work.

I needed to attempt to match this tank pairing in the recycled paper area of my mill. Limestone slurry tankers are unloaded here,  so it's just a guess these tall tanks store that stuff.

I scrounged Lowes PVC aisle and found parts for these.

After a few added styrene strips and a good bath, I spray bombed them. Next step is the cat house, bracing, and all the pipes and peripherals.

I needed something less structured, so I took a shot at the chip pile. It anchors the corner of the scene. My first foam base was too small, and the Glidden Gripper failed when the saws all came out.  So I went to the stash of 4 inch foam. It's rough and needs work, but enough progress for one Saturday.

I put out color samples for ground cover. My overhead shots show lots of color variations.

Now that you're building a bunch, maybe Trainworx will make similar fishbelly trailers.  They were very common in  the Northwest US through the 70s, and are still fairly common today.  I've seen one on I-64 in eastern Kentucky in almost 40 years back here.  The tractor was from Spokane.

There was a UP one that sat at the UP/BNSF junction in Spokane for a while, not sure if its still there.

This building started out as a stock kit on my very first N layout back in 1967, and has since migrated to each new layout (6 or 7 times in all). With each move it was reworked or modified in some way. Now it has been sawed in half and reassembled as shown to serve as one of the backdrops for my NH-based layout. It needs another roof section cut to fit, and some suitable long company name painted along the sides ("Pilgrim Brass Manufacturing and Foundry"?) and heavy weathering. I extended the size of the building (which sits beyond an embankment the tracks are on) by placing a roof section just below the top of the embankment and butting it up against the building (partly visible at the RH side). Some smokejacks and other possible rooftop equipment will draw attention to this lower addition.
I'm going to add new photos and updates to my construction blog (soon), so you can look there to see the progress on the rest of the layout.

Happy New Year everyone.  I did little other than soak up the sun on a beach this holiday, but I'm back now and working on a few small projects to get my modelling going again.  I have completed the decaling on my Briggs 8-40CM unit, which benefited from a beautiful paint job by @craigolio1 .  I have to install the grab irons, railings and other details, and put the last pieces on the chassis, but this project is nearing completion and I am pleased by the result.

Ike:  Such trailers were still very common in Wenatchee as late as 2008, the last time I was there, carrying big orchard boxes of fruit.  They show up in the highway cameras in central Washington now and then, usually carrying fruit boxes or lumber.

As far as I know there is no age limit on truck trailers, so even if they're not being built new, they'll be around for decades to come.  And, for all I know, there may be companies building fishbelly trailers today.  But they do seem to be a local peculiarity.

At the encouragement of several friends on TRW, a little bit of honest track build-out on the GC&W:



This is still temporary/test construction, and this rail and roadbed will be peeled-up. However, the intent is that this is the hopefully proof of the "final" build method for when track starts going down per plan.

I am currently working on my three (two BC Rail and one CN) but not enough progress to post on. Scott I am assuming you found the appropriate SD40-2 Donor chassis?

Thanks Chris.  Yes, the chassis is operational and seems pretty smooth in operation (I ran it about an hour when I first finished it last year).  You can see a bit of it in the background in the picture.

Weathering this unit will be challenging.  The roof seems to be covered in black soot and these units have many variations in the red and blue weathering due to replacements.  They are all pretty grimy too.

Left it powered for DCC and lighting effects. There's P42 at the other end too that Grant Eastman speed matched for me.

You could have opted to just remove all the mechanical bits and still have it pick up power (while free-rolling).  That way you wouldn't even have to worry about speed matching.  I have gutted few Kato locos like that to install train cameras in them.  The track power supplies power to the camera and the function-only lighting decoder (which is cheaper than a full-function decoder).
