Weekend Update 1/3/16

I used Kato Mikado traction tires on the Berkshire.  The drivers are a little larger, but the tires still fit fine.

Other details:
The back of those wheels has a nice sized axle nub.  I chuck that into the mill.  The little nicks you see on
the flanges in that picture are from I-don't-know-what.     But I do not chuck these by the flange.

I cut the grooves .007" deep.  The Mikado tires are nominally .010" thick.  Experimentally, I have found that .007" is just perfect.  The tires protrude just enough to provide
good traction without affecting anything else (that I notice, anyway).

More work done on the layout with the little fellow including city details, track testing, Sam learns geology 101 and a "major production" takes shape.... all the moderately interesting details in the Layout Thread for the Kanto Sub of the Puddington Valley Division.....

Got some Youngstown plug doors back from Shapeways, so I can inch closer to having an accurate New Haven plug door 50' PS-1 utilizing the Athearn plug door model.

That looks rather promising, Bryan - are those doors your design (and if so, have you considered making them available for purchase)?

Not much modelling for me over the holidays. I decided the two dash 8s would look better idling away with the number boards lit so I carved those out.



I also discovered that the one on the left has a nice twist in the shell. She may wind up a shelf queen, or at most a mid train helper. I'll have to see how that looks when mounted.

You can try to de twist the shell with heat from a hairdryer as has been suggested, but maybe considered immersing the shell in a glass of hot water. This will provide even heat through the whole shell more effectively than can be done with a hairdryer and should allow you to gently remove the twist in the shell. I don't know what affect this May have on the paint however...

A company by the name of Downeast Models offered injection molded plastic versions in HO years ago, but is no longer active.  I based the N doors on that part.  I'll probably make them available, since they seem to fit the Athearn plug door car well.

Thanks Geoff.

I have done the hot water trick with other resin and plastic parts that needed straightening and it worked well.  If I have to paint it again it will only be the third time, no big deal, haha.  I'm more interested in having a straight model.

Looks to me like it was dropped from an overhead crane, since it's not in line with the tracks as if it was pushed off the rails.  Also, there's no trucks, and the damage to the pilot is probably where it hit the edge of the pit.

Working on renumbering some locomotives. I painted some of the walkways too. I discovered that Atlas has "glued" the walkways to their shell's "bases" on this particular run of GP-35s. I like that they did that for appearances sake, but it makes me a little too scared to try to paint the steps. Rather than trying to pry the walkways off, I think I"ll just live with the results. Eh, close enough. Here is C&EI "2":









Here is the stock version for comparison:










After seeing the prototype EJ&E #703 switching a yard here, I though I might try to simulate it for an upcoming project. I stripped the lettering off the cab. I think I'll go with the diagonal stripes along the frame. It SHOULD have a solid yellow frame stripe for the current "CN" version AND the fuel tank needs to be shortened. But again, I might just say "close enough."

I found the same with a pair of GP9s I painted a while back. They came apart with out too much effort and no damage. I just worked my around again and again pulling and prying a little each time until they came apart.

I'm a little late to the party, but I guess better late than never.  With the cold weather finally deciding to get here, I decided to update some of the scenery.  May not be much, but hey, for me its more than usual.
