Weekend Update 3/22/15

Well, to continue on the new tone - I was a French horn player as well.  Gave it up when I couldn't/wouldn't invest the 2 hours a day I needed to maintain my chops.
Now I play the horn on my PA-1 models...

I don't hate the tuba. In fact, as a bass trombonist, I love tubas. Tuba players are also useful for checking to see if the stage is level (the drool comes out of BOTH sides of their mouth). I kid, I kid...I love Roger Bobo. I have a recording of ...get your laughs in now, boys...Uranus with Roger and the late Tommy Johnson doubling with the LA Phil. It's a monster recording. I also enjoy Arnold Jacobs. He did a lot for us, too. Pretty much anyone to come out of Chicago was a monster. Charlie Vernon on bass bone...and this guy:



Where's @Hornwrecker ? He actually BUILDS instruments!

I'm also a contrabass junkie. I love all things contrabass. In fact, the only thing I love more than contrabass is octocontrabass.

Sorry I'm late, I was looking for the Weekend Low Brass update thread.

Been playing horn mostly semi-pro for the last 30 years.  Had to cut down due to a lung infection about ten years ago, so I went from playing 1st horn in some local orchestras to playing 4th in just one.  Having more fun playing the low stuff, and there's a hell of lot less stress, as well as a lot less money.

Someday, with enough beer and motivation, as well as enough brass tubing, I'm going to build a custom double horn, but in Bb basso and F.  Still trying to figure out how to keep the weight down; maybe a compensating system.

Last concert had Bolero on it.  I think the only member of the orchestra to play more notes than me was the snare drummer.  Eight pages of the same pattern, same note, over and over, like putting lug nuts on at an assembly line, over and over, oh look, I get to go up half a step for eight measures,... the end.

Anyway... and this is not a joke... it is the way it actually happened: we had budgeted for several years to buy a contrabassoon. No particular strong personal need other than the "cool factor", but maybe also to have at least one contra in our region for ensembles playing scores that called for it. I had even visited the Fox (bassoon and oboe) factory in Indiana to specify "my" instrument. With the money set aside, I was within days of placing the order... and then the layout building opportunity fell in our laps. Yes, that's right - for about the same price as a contrabassoon, we bought a 3000 sq. ft. building. Professional musical instruments are scary expensive.

What astounds me is the sheer number of serious musicians on TRW. Just amazing.

The Gene Pokorny tuba-railfan connection is not unique. I ran into my band director (the tuba guy) at a train show.

Nathan (and Leslie) horns have several possible chords, depending on model. Custom orders also change things around.

Think that's bad, try playing  bass trombone to MARS from Holst's "The Planets".  DA DA DA DAAH DAAH DA DA DA ad nauseum for the whole thing.   Oh, the humanity......
