B&O Wagontop Boxcar - Double door version

Folks, I have the ability to produce resin castings of the double-door version of the famous B&O Wagontop boxcars.

I am wondering if there would be any interest in these as a simple kit.

They could be made in two types:

Type-A: Basic Kit - just a shell and a chassis
Type-B: Finescale Kit - contains a cast chassis, and a basic shell that requires the modeler to add the finer details on their own. These being roof-walks, ladders, grab-irons, and brake-wheels.

Prices have yet to be determined.
I am looking into more than a few avenues in-order to produce the best product possible.


I'd be more than happy to hear your thoughts, ideas, and input.

I would be interested in a few of they. While I appreciate it being a basic type kit as having the best possible change of keeping the cost down I do think that the Fine N Scale version is the best option. I would also like to see a model of the round top covered hopper.

B&O N-34 Early and Late should not be a problem. I predict they will be available.

I don't know if Fine N Scale makes a double door version, but their single door version was a bit rough in terms of details.

As for decals, that's well above my pay-grade.

I'm aware of the Pennsy boxcars they do (although I have yet to take the plunge and buy some 40 footers), but I am not too certain if they make (or made) a double-door B&O wagontop.

The only company I know of that ever made a double-door B&O wagontop was Camden & Amboy Models, which I am working to either revitalize or reproduce the master that was used to make the molds. The only casting that is left is 2nd generation and is nowhere near the quality needed to be a proper molding master.

Well...after googling "fine N scale" and looking under "freight cars" for about 30 seconds, they do not offer double door B&O boxcars.  That was certainly difficult.. 

On a non-joking, positive note, I would be interested in several finescale kits of the B&O double door wagontop car...the separate details version.  I can bend my own grabs, apply my own running boards and if BLMA still offers their freight car ladders, I can do that too.  Precision Scale's catalog offers both brass and Styrene brake details and I've got plenty of etched brakewheels from both JnJ and GMM and brake lines from BLMA.  Trucks and Z-scale couplers aren't a prob....so I'm set.  However, it'd be nice if the etched details (multilevel etching please) were included in the kit.

When looking at early 50's photos of the Ogden Yard, there are several B&O wagontops clearly evident, so they'd fit right into my era and location!

I'll be keeping an eye out and my ear to the rail.

I will buy one to try.  If I have success with it, I would buy more.

The grab irons might be  a challenge, but I am not unwilling to try.  My parts box is full of stirrups and brake wheels.  I have MT trucks and couplers as well as some Accumates.  Somebody does sell etched brass roofwalks.  I forget if anyone sells 1950s or 1940s B&O freight car decals, but somebody must.

I will try one.

I liked the Fine N Scale waggontops.  I have two versions of the freight boxcar and three of the express cars.  I also have some kind of fifty foot PRR car from Fine N Scale.  I think that it is a waggontop, but I would have to go look.  I like that one, as well.

Put me down for one, and if I like it and can finish it, I will buy a few more.

This is the FNS website page for rollingstock and Dick will sell direct if you ask. He has always been helpful for me.

The FNS 40 Wagon Top Boxes are the only ones he produced and only in single door either ribbed or plain.

I would really like to see a pic of the prototype cars because to-date I have not been able to find any.

M-53 and M-15 did have DD versions. However, the M-15 was a fishbelly design.

Ah, OK. So basically C&A's M53 was available with either a single door (as below) or a double door?
