B&O Wagontop Boxcar - Double door version

I've seen a number of C&A models in my day. In fact, I've even sent a photo of some to Spookshow Mark's site:

I haven't been impressed.

They were good for the time, but unless they're significantly retooled (and properly scaled), I wouldn't be too hot on one today.

Have to agree Ed, There are better ways of producing patterns of the M53 now than the past. I have so many of the FNS models and the amount of detail he has incorporated is fine. The only thing I find a bit disconcerting is the ride height.

Has anyone come up with a prototype photo of the real thing. The model photo I found shows the doors as being plain. If that is the case then a bash of the FNS Model is not out of the question. Not as a production item but as a kit bash. Might just give that a go over the Christmas break.

I agree.  However, he got the SP/UP herald positions wrong on the 50' PFE reefer (I just live with it).  Seems like I remember an esoteric discussion (maybe on TRW) that the "wrinkles" only applied to welded cars, and that riveted cars didn't have 'em.  I don't know, as photos of riveted cars I've seen show stress wrinkles.

Anyway, I love the effect.  Makes the model look much more prototypical.

As to ride height.  Resin is sure easy to file.

That would be the way I would lean, whether flat or corrugated doors.  The existing doors could be milled off and replaced with existing plastic doors (such as MTL's double doors) or etched brass doors.

I probably would seek out a prototype pic though, preferably of a car with corrugated doors, before I add it to my project list.

I am interested in your project and could see picking up a couple. I do have some questions as I am a bit confused about your potential project.  Could you provide more information about your master? Have your built it yet or do you have one on hand? A photo or two would be very helpful for those who are making a decision about this car. Also, when you state that you have "the ability" to make resin castings, what does this mean? Would you be producing them or working with someone else? As you know, producing good (ie minimal flash, no warping,  bubble free) castings takes some experience, and clarification on this would also be helpful. It seems like there is a fair bit of interest for this unique car.

The only mention of doubledoors even existing in the B&O color guide is a reference to an article on the M-15L's in the December 1982 Mainline Modeler. There were only 49 of them made specifically for automobile parts service. I bet most of those stayed in captured service so they were not seen randomly around the line to be photographed.

The vehicle we are looking at appears to be a M15L/M
.
Although looking similar to the M53 I gather it is quite different  and unfortunately Funaro and Camerlengo who make the HO Kit shown above do not give a end view of the model. It would be good to be able to get a general arrangement drawing of the model similar to those on Rob's PRR Homepage.

So, is the C&A model an M-15L or is it just their M-53 with double doors? Or is there no discernible difference?
