      There are diesels that can be used to pull B&O cars. The Kato B&O E-8's that were released when the original B&O smooth side sets were released. These are somewhat hard to find. Easier to locate are all the Life Like B&O E units,E-6,E7 these run very smoothly and the color is a good match.Also do not forget the by now collectors item Rivarossi B&O E-8 poor performance,not good color match,Con Cor used the same Rivarossi body shells along with a new B unit shell from Heljin that had steam generator vents at both ends on Kato/ Con Cor drives. Steam power will be more trickey B&O steam must be kit bashed execpt for a Brass Cincinnation pacific. Hard core B&O modelers SKIP GEAR (Tony) or Rodger Perkins will know more about B&O steam than I do. Nate Goodman (Nato).

I am only a modeler of B&O and far from knowledge at the level of Tony Hines and many others.
I am also not a rivet counter, thus I had a Kato GS-4 painted in Royal Blue and lettered for B&O a couple of years ago.  Subsequently, I purchase two more GS-4's in the black scheme and relettered them for B&O.

I have the Kato B&O smooth side set, but did not have a B&O E-8 until very recently.  I came by it when Kato had a Labor Day Special in 2011; I purchased an un-assembled E-8 from Kato USA.  The B&O came with other un-dec body shells.

Prints I have show B&O 4-8-2 heading a passenger train and a class N1 4-4-4-4 heading another (actually a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement) had vandy tender.  The Model Power 4-6-2 were also sold in B&O.

Again, though I'm a rivet counter, I'm not faulting MTL for releasing foobie paint schemes... only that they don't release the real ones first.

Imagine if Kato released a PRR based K-4 Steam Engine, but refused to paint it in PRR for the first 6 months.

Condensed:

Diesels - E's and F's are normal for diesels. E's being more common. Plenty of options for these models.

Steam:
Model Power Pacific: B&O P5/5a - Both USRA and Vanderbilt tenders work. Even fits the bill for a low mounted headlight which is not normal for the B&O

Rivarossi Heavy and light Pacific - Heavy is a stand in, Light also a P5
Bachmann Hvy Mountain - Closest to the BRP and B&O Mountains. C&O version has the most correct valve gear. All versions need a new tender.

Is there any good B&O power out there readily available to pull the heavyweight cars?  Steam or Diesel?

Not sure how accurate this would be to pull a passenger train since the B&O FP7s were actually ex-C&O F-units at the end of their career, but Intermountain made a few B&O FP7s that you should be able to find:

Thanks for all the engine referrals!  My dad was a big B&O fan and had an HO passenger set.  Seeing the cars gave me an itch to have a small train!

For those of us who like N&W all we have had are coaches excluding the con cor foobs. I can use afew kato cars as ex wabash cars, but no correct sleepers. Funny how little varnish there is that looks good in this scale.

Huh? There are no correct coaches for N&W in N scale. Rapido made some nice approximations of the PM class though. Walthers makes the correct pullman smoothside 10-6 sleeper for N&W, but failed to offer it in N&W.

WOT made some nice stand-ins for N&W HW baggage cars.

Well, I'm formally withdrawing my request for coaches in B&O. 

Saw the RPO and Obs in person last night.  Blue is bright instead of royal, lettering and striping looks lemon yellow, instead of gold.  Gray stripes are poorly masked.

This makes me sad.

More for me then. The blue is a touch light but not any worse than the horrible Centrailia cars. The lettering is exactly right. I'm not sure what references you have misread but B&O Blue and Gray coaches do not have Gold lettering but Deluxe Gold lettering. Deluxe Gold is not gold leaf and is a somewhat lemon yellow color. The striping on my cars, both gray and gold are clean. The only thing missing is the gold and gray should wrap around the ends of the cars slightly.

Dulux gold is what I was refering to.  Dulux is not yellow.  It's also not a mettalic gold, but a cream/tan.

There's a quick, readily available reference about B&O Passenger Paint, in this issue of the B&O Modeler:

Bob Chapman describes it as best matching Floquil "Mud".  Nothing about it is bright yellow, though MTL isn't the first manufacturer to misinterpret "Dulux" gold. 

He also describes the Blue and Gray well, and gives options for matching to hobby paints.
