Intermountain SD45-2 has arrived....yes, really

I was surprised to see them, too.

They are not shy about their pricing but then again no one else is either nowadays.

I have one SD40-2 from the run a few years ago and really like it. It's well-detailed and runs nicely and I stopped to look at these new Erie Lackawanna units but it's a moot point since I don't have that much disposable income to buy one sight unseen.

I'm also surprised, but resisting. I have a first-run that's been on the bench for a while and is almost repaired (broken gear tower), but I was thinking replace rather than continue wringing out the bugs. Time is more limited than hobby money at the moment.

My reluctance stems from the IM SD40T-2 I have versus the ScaleTrains' version since acquired. The dimensional fidelity and detailing of the IM model pales in the comparison, and the IM SD45-2 is already known for missing the mark on certain details. Do I want to acquire another loco with mid-2000s' tooling on the possibility that ST (or possibly Atlas) will do one with current production tech? Not so sure.

When these came out I bought 8 of them, I was disappointed with the fit and finish and the fact the walkways had no tread. I've had no trouble running them but I'm a bit reluctant to buy more. Yes the early runs had their glass glued in

According to our resident EL foamer Ken, the gray is too light on the 1st run SD45-2's. He's hoping the 2nd run is corrected.

I'm intrigued by the R&N units.

But I just picked up this project for $40, so I might just wait.

I was quite surprised to finally see these ship. They had been sitting with an "In Production" status on Intermountain's website for quite a few years.

For those not afraid of some milling/filing/fettling, the Kato SD40-2 Mid Production chassis can provide a useful upgrade for the Intermountain shells.

Got my NSE  bicentennial AT&SF units. Have not run one yet. Quality of decoration is nice. Colors seem a little weak, especially the red. Still quite beautiful. - Rob
