GHQ Pennsy PRR R50b reefer kit

[ Guests cannot view attachments ] About 7-8 years ago we did a couple of very limited runs on a Pennsy R50b reefer kit that we designed.  In total we did 250 kits over 2 runs, and they each sold out in about 24 hours.  Originally we did it to see how the whole process would work for us.  We are a metal casting company, and the shells were cast in polyurethane, there were etchings, there were decals, and of course cast pewter parts.  We learned quite a bit from those limited runs.  Since that time we have had a lot of people contact us, and ask when we were planning to do more.

We wanted to start a dialogue to see what all of you think about the idea.  If we do it again, we are going to try it as our first Kickstarter.  In order for this to make sense for us, we would probably need to have the "goal"
for the Kickstarter set at a point where we would need to have about 500-550 units backed.  Based on how things went before, that number shouldn't be a problem, but we want to do an initial gauge of the interest level here.  We will also put some things up on Facebook, and blast them out in an e-mail directly from GHQ to everyone on our list.

The kit would be pretty much exactly the same as when we ran them before.  The one exception would be that the decals would be done by a decal printing company rather than those that we did before in-house on the Alps printer.

What do you think?  Is this something that you would want to back?  How many do you think that you would like?  Do you have any questions about the idea?

If this concept works out well we have quite a few other projects that we would bring forward in the future, and try them out as Kickstarters.

Thanks for looking, and for sharing your thoughts!

I would very much like to see these kits return - I missed out on the previous runs and have been bummed about it ever since.  I would be interested in 2-4 of them.

I have a question though - why Kickstarter as a mechanism, as opposed to direct reservations with GHQ - or just making them, since the previous 250 disappeared more or less instantly?

I would support this simply based off this statement.  I would be down for 1 or 2.

A question for the hive, how far did these travel? Would they make it to the upper midwest?

They went all over.  The PRR's Makeup of Trains shows them regularly going as far as Texas and California, so the upper Midwest is just a hop skip & jump by comparison.

I’d be in for one through Kickstarter.

Since your a established company and it’s a product that has been done successfully in the past, I’m not worried it would be subpar or that it wouldn’t happen if the goal was met.

I was fortunate enough to get three of these kits, and they're great. Count me in for a few more!

I would be in for 4-5.  I have a PRR transition era layout in progress right now.

Any chance of more Loco-Master kits like the L-1 Mikado conversion?  I love mine!

I'd happily get one.  The Kickstarter idea is an interesting one.
