At the Duffields commuter station, as at many such stations, there is chain-link fence between the tracks which forces pedestrians to use the paved walkway rather than cutting-across where ever they would like.  Installing the fence proved harder than I thought.  I used a photo-etched fence from N-Scale Architect and spray painted it gray.  The fence is rather long and the tracks are slightly curved, so holding it upright between the tracks while glue was setting just did not work - the fence would tilt and warp.  I then tried to drill small holes in the ballast to accept the small fence posts, but this was pretty much a disaster as well - trying to drill holes are precisely the right spot was near impossible, at least for me.  Then I hit upon the idea of using strip styrene.  I used 0.2 x 0.6 strip styrene, painted it gray, and cut two pieces that were each long enough for two sections of the fence.  I drilled holes for the two fence posts, and glued the fence to these styrene 'feet', one at each end of the long fence.  Now the fence would stand up straight without me having to hold it.  I was able to easily position the fence between the two tracks, with just the right amount of curve, and then buried the feet with ballast.

Not a ton for me this week, I have to submit my dissertation Monday morning. While my wife was doing a final proof read, I was able to sneak out to the garage and add number boards to my WM RS2s. I've also been working on WM still end railings for these units, they are test fit in this shot. The look ok, though I'm curious to see how they'll look with wire railing added vs. the stock rails on the rest of the model.

First extension to a Bachmann 4-8-4 shell to make an ATSF  2-10-4. This is using 1 shell that is rough but it's all going to look worse before it gets better!  . I will also need to turn down the flanges on drivers 2 and 3 by a small amount. Lots more to do on this puppy

I painted the window frames black on the Rivarossi cars (70 and 80) to better match the Micro Trains cars (car 71). It's the best I could do with my shaky hands....

I also hit the trucks with a light coat of weathering.

I'm going to call them done now. Found another one on Ebay this past week and will give it the same treatment as the other two.

A bit more work on 801 over the last couple of weeks with basic painting complete.   Attempting to reproduce the effect of the hastily patched Erie Lackawanna colours on the original as shown in this 1978 photo (Photo Credit:Sid Elliott).

I’m working on relettering this HO scale Durham & Southern GP38-2 into a Seaboard Coast Line engine, as it existed after the merger.  Like the prototype, D&S No. 2002 (“Bull Durham 3”) is becoming SCL No. 558.  One side is almost finished, but the other side, as well as the nose emblem and numberboards remain:

Nice work, but are you sure you have enough horns on that FA unit? Looks like a LOUD one!😁

I have a weekend with nothing going on, and poor weather to boot, so I decided to get some layout work done. I have my terrain fairly well roughed in, but I need to get some structures built before I finalize it. I started with this one. It's a Walther's "Jim's Repair Shop" that I painted and weathered a bit, put the signs on the windows, and made my first attempt at an N-scale interior. It's a photo of a barbershop printed to size and mounted on cardboard, then wrapped around the interior walls to give a sense of depth. So far, so good! I will likely post a couple other structures this weekend as I get them done. For my first interior project, I'm pretty happy with this so far. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I just drew up a very similar building for a client.


They own the building, which is in really bad shape, so we are drawing up plans to replace it in kind with a new building.
I'm thinking this little guy might be my first experiment converting a 3D print from my day job program...

But first, it's time for some weekend JFRTM!

Oh, and as long as we're heaping laurels on @bbussey , here's my entry.  This was my first bit of 3D printing... thanks to ESM.



At this points, it looks like it was made with toothpaste, but when Bryan first worked it out, I thought it was brilliant enough to part with the $40 (or whatev) to get one.

The interior is incredible, with stacks of plates on the shelves, burgers on the griddle, and I believe you can tell it's a Pall Mall in the ashtray, and not one of those candy a$$ filter tips.  It took some micro surgery to get it properly lit, but it was well worth the effort.

The model now resides on my Cumberland Station TTrak module, so it can be enjoyed by the millions of people who clamor to get to N scale Weekend in Altoona (the one time I made it there before we became quarantined).



I also roster a smattering of ESM mill gondolas, and an X58(?) that I have yet to letter for the Laurel Valley.  Thanks for your contributions to the hobby, Bryan.

Check out 0:26. I’m not sure if it’s authentic sounds, but it does sound like WM horns from other footage I’ve found.
