I am working up the courage to paint some Kato F7s in the Minneapolis & St Louis green/yellow/black scheme and wanted to practice on something first. I had a GP-7 shell lying around that I had no other use for, so I did my first “fantasy” loco. It was kind of fun, actually. 

It looks pretty good under the layout lighting, not quite as good up close under the work bench lights but not bad. I give myself a B-. I think the F units will be easier as they don’t have all those doors,louvres, etc. on them.

Here’s what I learned from it.

Use Tamiya tape and burnish it down good for better color separation, especially if the separation doesn’t have a stripe decal to hide the edge, like on the green strip
Don’t feel the need to mask off all of one color to do in one spray.
I have a tendency to go too heavy on the first coat, go light and let it dry and hit it again if needed. You can add paint much easier than taking it off!

Personally, I’ve found my best custom painting technique is to stick to one color paint schemes and to weather the hell out of it. 

Of course, mine look even better if the photo is slightly out of focus and the lighting is poor.

Installed the rest of the turnouts and track at the west end of Cedricsburg Yard, with the exception of the caboose track.



Next up is to tie all the feeders into the bus and test 'er out. Painting the track (and ballasting) is going to have to wait a few months, though. We're in the middle of a week of sub-zero temps, and I don't imagine I'll be opening the windows for ventilation anytime before April.

Plenty else to do, though.

I met Bryan in Milwaukee at a convention a few years back and had a wonderful chat with him.  Thanks for all of the great models you have made available.  I have several PRR X58's and G26's, XIH's and a couple of G32 kits.  Keep up the Pennsy love.
