I spent a relaxing morning last Sunday making foam dust in my backyard (post dust pictures):




And yesterday I painted the track, glued down the first set of hills for the cut, and started on the initial shaping of the hills that continue the cut on the other side of the bridge:

Hi everyone! Due to various things, such as working on the layout, summertime yardwork, and oh, a small electrical fire in the kitchen a month ago, I've not been on TRW in a month or so. But, I have made progress on the layout. The Erie's Rochester Branch is operable from Painted Post NY (a single fiddle track for staging) to Bath, NY, so the Bath and Hammondsport RR now has an outlet to the national rail network. Meanwhile, the parallel DL&W double-track main to Buffalo is a-building nearby, and has already built the crossing over the Erie line.



















Not sure how the lowly Branch drew a brand-new bay window caboose for this run...

That wash looks great. I’ve never tried washes and always wondered about them. What’s your method? Do you keep the car standing up or laying down? When you mention powders were they mixed in?

The ink wash is applied with a brush to roof seams and side seams, ladder shadows, tack boards, hardware, and other details.  The powders are applied with a semi-stiff flat brush - some close to the car color to fade the lettering, then grime colors on the sides and ends, and finally soot on the car roof.  I did not do it on this car, but I have also airbrushed the washes on other cars with good results.  I am going to try oil paint washes weathering.  I purchased my makeup sponges yesterday.

I don't get to post here very often!  My layout is bascially a loop of track at the office.  Well, I've been working from home since March and really started to miss running trains.  So I started some T-Trak modules.  This is actually the first time I've done any actual scenery work.  It's nothing fancy but exciting!  I've started 5 other modules to make a small loop.  I'm using the Woodland Scenics / Kato T-Trak module kits.  They go together pretty well, though I'm a little concerned about durability.

Got my FEL and water buffalo painted up this afternoon.  Think I went a little overboard on the FEL with dirt grime.

Agree.  Looks like it's been loading coal, not gravel. Less grimy black, more dust and gray.

Went back and repainted the FEL.  Used air brush with light grey primer this time. 

That was quick, but it's way moar better.  Kudos!

Weathered a BLI NYC boxcar. I used ink wash with Bragdon powders on a matte finish.

Doug, that is sweet, love it, a very unique smallish boxcar. Mine’s an older iteration, BLI did a nice job.

Thanks, that clears up a lot. I’ll have to try it soon. Do you do a similar process on the other cars you post here? Your weathering always looks really good.
