I did not help out at Leamington but did visit, normally attend their big meet ups at Mech models and Derby convention and on their trips to the Netherlands, and a few times a year at Kegworth.

Rule 0: Build modules that fit in your vehicle.  I unfortunately once built modules larger than my vehicle, so they didn't go anywhere.

My a$$hat moment was the realization that my car's bench seat folds down.  Only took a year to find out.

More specifically curious where 68" L falls on the general spectrum of suitability.

That's good sized , but you gotta just ask yourself - Does it fit/store at home without getting damaged? Can you carry/transport it from the vehicle to the needed location without dropping/damaging it? It's best to double up modules so they can form a "crate" by facing inward on each other so limit damage potential . The larger or the odder-shaped they are, the harder this is.

Whatcha need is a module storage cabinet, complete with soft closing drawer slides! The space that I had for storages dictated the size of my modules. Straight modules will be 18”x48”, but this is also why my curved modules have the shape that they do. It was the only way that I could achieve the minimum radius and still have a footprint that fit my storage space.

I have built most of my straight modules (7 of them) at 6’3” and 4 more at 6’0”. The longer you can go without a module joint the better. I’ve also done 2 modules at 18”. Sometimes you need little ones too.

While a necessity for roundy roundy, I would rather see yards at each end rather than a loop.  Especially if you can pull off a rig of 10 scale miles or so.  Trains don't run to loops, they run to terminals.  If you have a loop, maybe it's at the end of a branch, but wouldn't it be better to have a long siding where you can run around your train?

To me, if you want to run loops, you do TTrak or NTrak.  if you want to run trains, you're going from terminal to terminal with whatever work there is along the way.  That's the beauty of FreemoN.  You're connecting stuff to build a railroad, not a display loop.

Plus, consider scheduling participants.  Run your train, pull into the terminal, and break it down.  Got more time?  Run the next train.  The downside is traffic control and figuring who belongs to what rolling stock at the end of the show...

@Ed Kapuscinski , the Ridgeley/Windsor St. Yard, having been cut in half at least twice, could become two "end of run" terminals by simply building a portable benchwork under each end.  If you wanted, you could stitch a balloon loop to the main, make it 4 or 6 tracks for staging, and have functioning classification switching as trains "arrive" from staging to the yard, pick up your cut of cars and head onto the layout.

I hope to have a small yard at each end of my layout, but with a disguised return loop on each end to allow continuous run when I just want to let’em roll.
