Weekend Update 11/5/17

One of the odder local stories I've stumbled on is that not only is my hometown the birthplace of the Warren Circus Flatcar, but the owner of the Cole Bros. circus lived a block away from me in a brick Queen Anne house appropriately covered in scrimshaw circus-style scrollwork - J. Augustus Jones.

So I've been slowly building an N Circus train for that show.   I haven't been real happy with the lack of variety on wagons, and the fact that as good as the MT wagons are, you need a heck of a lot more wagons to fill a train.   So I've been working on that.

I debuted the "America" wagon kit with the laser-printed decals down at Altoona - that's a decal, not paint - and I just assembled the first Cole baggage wagon tonight.   I scratchbuilt the master and did it in resin, this is the first build, and I'll be offering it as a kit.   There's an MT wagon here for comparison.



The wheels are also Grandt Line, and I'll be supplying those with the kit.   This one has full undercarriage and the front wagon wheels can be assembled in a pivoting position, as well as support a wagon tongue.

Cool , I thought I would never see more wagon types . Let me know please , I want circus wagons !!!

Some of those could probably be used to make scrap loads for gons too.

There's definitely some good scrap-load fodder in there, as well as in with some of the other watch parts that I bought.
Tonight everything is getting a good inspection since I haven't really had the opportunity to take a good look at all of it.

Yeah, I still have a lot of work to do on head end cars, but the MT cars were "close enough" to get a version of the Laker out there.  Or at least one of the smaller passenger trains. 

It's a pain, to do these two cars, I have to use three sets of decals, but I find decaling relaxing.

The SD40-2s in the front are Intermountain, the GEVO in the rear is Fox Valley Models.  None of them are mine, but it was fun posing them for pictures.

If you treat it as a collection of sub-assemblies or construction groups and don't try to build the KV in one sitting, it does go quickly.  Avoid looking at the big picture, concentrate on the immediate step.  I've found that method to work best for me, learned it building the N Scale of Nevada Piggy Packer kit as that suggestion was in the beginning of the instructions.  It wasn't overwhelming when I performed one group of instructions per night.  Had it built in six nights.

The acid tankcar will be similar in intricacy, as will be the FGE R7 reefer.  But each stage in isolation is not difficult.

Philip:  If the passenger cars were  in an MOW scheme that wouldn't look unusual in Appalachia.  Many of the smaller communities, at least until recently, didn't look like they'd changed for decades.  Now they all seem to have check cashing and payday loan outlets, or have simply been abandoned.
