Weekend Update 1/29/17

Nothing but 3D lately.  After getting the TSC gauge done and settling on under frame height for the coupler box, I was able to finish my NP flat car along with an idea to convert the WoT flat car.



I also worked some on my CGW Motorcar 1000.

Jason, I'd be in for a 1000 shell if they were available. I've kicked around building one from scratch on a LL SW chassis (don't know if the wheel base is right) but never got it going. I built this instead. Not sure they would have run together, but who knows?

Wasnt it you that got Micro Scale to do the CGW caboose decals? If so, Thanks! It's what got this project going.

My weekend started when the mailman showed up with my new toys from James Will.This truck (kit) was a sample he sent with my order to show me some of the plans he has for the IH Cargostar COE.This is 3D printed and flawless. I also got two more cabs to convert a few of the way to many Ford Model Cs into something other than Ford Model Cs.

I was under the impression that these were not Shapeways prints because James had mentioned that he had someone else lined up to print them. He informed me through email this am that they are indeed Shapeways.Now I really am impressed with their quality.

These are N scale.I have not talked to James about a Z version yet.

He is planning a whole series of these including two and three axle semi tractors plus trailers.

Took Amtrak up to Windsor Locks, CT (hotel is here) for the Amherst show over in Springfield, Mass.
Rather than have it ride in a cold trailer with a bunch of N-trak modules, the M3T rode up with me on the train.
Plus, I figured Pud would appreciate one last train trip, even if it was only a Northeast Regional.

Sunday I'll be running the train on the N-Trak layout in the Better Living Center in case anyone wanted to stop by and see it. I plan on running it early on Sunday so I can get photos and video of it before the crowds hit.

The problem with you Jonathan, is I can never tell if you're posting Z Scale stuff or N Scale.   
Which is it in this case?
I assume since you talk about converting Fords, that it must be N.

This was another week of refining the track layout for the yard at Dawson Creek, with the aim of finalizing the location of the  first switch at the west end so that the mainline can be extended around the curve to join with it.

The sub-roadbed is assembled from 1/8" square strips of balsa wood with an 18" radius in the centre and easements at either end:




After sanding the assembly smooth on top and bottom, and sanding in a gentle grade down toward the yard, the curve was installed on the layout and Woodland Scenics foam trackbed was added.  This photograph shows the current end of steel at extreme right, the new right-of-way curving around toward the yard and meeting up with the road crossing at bottom left:




Time was also spent finalizing the track arrangement for the spurs into the Northwest Wood Preservers mill.  This was a stud mill with a creosote plant and tie mill.  There will be a chip loading track for three cars, a lumber loading track for four cars, and a tie spur serving the creosote plant for two cars.  Most of the mill will have to be represented on the backdrop but it looks like I will have room for the burner, chip loader, and a few other foreground items of interest:




Here is a lower angle view which shows the first turnout for the yard at bottom left, awaiting connection with the new mainline curve, and the trackage into the mill:




I am now waiting on some of the 3" wide foam trackbed strips from my local hobby shop; when those arrive I will be able to lay track around the new curve and connect to the first yard turnout.

Might wye turnouts be a better option for the two turnouts that are off the mainline by helping to ease the sharp radius on two of the sidings?

Haha!  Sounds like you enjoy ballasting almost as much as I do.  Although it's only a HCD layout, you have no idea how much I appreciate that the ballasting on my layout is complete.

Once I get started it's ok.  I did Porters last night and cleaned things up this morning, and moved on to do Hanover area as well while I was in the mood.  I went ahead and used up the rest of my grass blend to get the field inside the wye done and paved Porters Rd.
