This is REALLY TOUGH to pass up but I can't justify taking advantage of it. Already have an SW1 to paint into SP colors that I managed to at least get at an OK discount and I just don't need any more. Not much into loco flipping either, so all I can do is sob.

Thanks for the heads up. I missed a sale Amazon had on the SW-1's and I've been watching the prices on them so I could pick one up.

Yeah, $37 with free shipping was even too much for me to pass up a CNW SW-1.

It was a TB post back in Oct.  Someone through Amazon was selling SW-1s for $37.  I didn't ask questions, I just hit 'order' as fast as I could.  I think it only lasted part of a day and prices jumped back up.

I always thought the SW1 was cool. 

I have absolutely no use for one. Although N&W inherited some in the 1964 merger, I never saw any switchers of this type on the N&W when I was growing up. In Williamson (the west end of the Pokey), "switchers" were normally GP9s and RS11s ...

Still, I have to resist!

I really don't need any U25Cs, and I thought the paint on the L&N units was way too light, making it easier to just walk away.

Then I found this picture :



Damn, the paint is much closer than I thought (at least as compared to the factory paint on the 1:1 L&N U25Cs).  That said, I must resist, because, again, they're not really in the correct era for me, seeing that this paint scheme would be at least fifteen years before my era of 1983-86.

But the price is so good . . . noooooo, it's Christmas, must spend on others, not self; must spend on others, not self.

I don't have enough data honestly, but when I was looking at photos to find models I could use, most sites stopped about 1983 as like last known photos... For both models.

The L&N history cuts off at 1982, because the L&N was merged with the Seaboard Coast Line into the Seaboard System on or about December 29, 1982.

So, some U25Cs made it to the Seaboard System.  Here's a pair of U25Cs and a U30C in February 1983, which puts them in my era.  Technically, these U25Cs are not former L&N, but they demonstrate the Family Lines scheme that was at least ten years old by this date.  So, the gray and yellow L&N paint scheme, as seen on the model U25C, was long history on the prototype U25Cs by 1983.

Here's three U25Cs (possibly all former L&N) in 1984, and they're not on the dead line!  So, I could plausibly run U25Cs on my layout, but the paint scheme on the Arnold model is wrong for my era.  I have enough projects uncompleted without having to worry about repainting locomotives, so I'm hoping that I can fight off the urge on what's otherwise one heckuva deal.

I'd say do it! I did and the only thing I regret at the moment is the time UPS is taking to update their tracking.... (ordered last Thursday)
As for the U25Cs I didn't dive that far into it, but interesting to see they got "repainted" and continued on in the SCL.

My new SW1s arrived yesterday. Today is my last day of work for the year, so hopefully by Christmas I have the new project pretty well done.

I missed that deal (by minutes). That's why I kept checking the price on them, just so I wouldn't miss it again. Prices have been $129 (there are still some at that price) with the occasional dip to $109. Suddenly a couple dropped to $90 yesterday. It just wasn't low enough to get me to pull the trigger until I came here and saw the sale. Ordered yesterday and they shipped yesterday (according to email). Still not $37 but $44 came with free shipping and that's close enough for me.

Received the U25C's today...

Simply a stunning locomotive. 

Arguably the nicest diesel shell on the market today.

Luv the coupler.  If they were available in bulk I'd be converting my fleet.

The handrails are very thin and look great!  But they seem to pop out of place by simply looking at them... And getting them back in place (without knocking loose every other handrail)... Well it will about drive you to drink.  After getting them all back in place I got out the Elmer's and starting dabbing.
