Scaletrains game changer

Just happened to check the Scaletrains Facebook and it mentions the N scale convention and a game changer! This should be interesting, if they're announcing something I would guess its a locomotive. Time will tell!

PRR H10!

Why not, we finally got a K4.

This could be a record for earliest mention of PRR steam in a new thread.

How about an N8 cabin car with working lights?  Sort of like the Atlas H15/16-44.

Scroll down to what's next for confirmation that it is a locomotive...

I'll go out on a limb and guess it'll be the turbine they did in HO :)

Probably more containers.

They're changing the game by making only containers but calling them rolling stock and locomotives.  :)

knowing the folks over there, whatever they choose to make will be well done.

I know on the HO front, they're like 6 projects past what has already been announced.

Enjoy!

Well, it only took TWO replies this time to get to the PRR...
A "game changer" might be  a steam loco that is NOT PRR... :D
Otto K., whose money is on the Turbine (even if I can't use it).

This has me thinking what would really constitute a game-changer in N scale.

For a locomotive, I think it would have to be a factory-installed DCC decoder with a built-in keep-alive capability.

If we broadened the spectrum to include all things N scale, I think we still have a very long way to go toward a bullet-proof track system with scale rails, integral switch machines, and North American tie size and spacing.

Other than that, maybe I lack the imagination to conceive of something that really is a game-changer.  With the exception of track, I think N scale stands shoulder-to-shoulder with HO in terms of detail, reliability, and even sound.

I'm convinced that smoke in N scale is probably a bad idea, if for no other reason than the residue it'll leave on rails.  N scale locomotives seem to always need every bit of electrical contact they can muster (it's probably more a weight thing than a size thing) and smoke oil residue won't help that at all.

I think there are plenty of holes in the diesel market but I don't know if any of them are large enough for a manufacture to fiscally risk as a first project.  I'm thinking FM H10/12-44, BLW AS616, Alco C430 or RS27, and my wish list could go on...  Maybe a Alco C424/425 to pick up where Walthers has totally dropped the ball in terms of availability?

I think a game changer would be an easily alterable drive mechanism which could be used under Shapeways produced shells to drive the aforementioned oddities and more.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

If you don't like PRR Steam, how about a PRR N8 caboose?

But seriously, if you are a new manufacturer wanting to enter a market, what's going to be the best way to establish yourself and guarantee your success?  In HO, ST's only locomotive announcement so far was the UP Turbine with extreme details.  I know of 3 friends with them on order.  Would they do the same in N?  A turbine might make a handful of modelers happy.  Are we willing to spend a $300+ on a unique locomotive?  (not me!)  Or would you do something that is very popular and somebody else is doing, like an SD40-2 with sound?   That might be a good way to barge into the market, but if there is a misstep it could damage your chances indefinitely.  I'd think it's got to be something in between; maybe a model like a RS3 with sound, but is that something you can really get a lot of potential buyers excited about?  Or how about a new GE Tier 4?  They apparently have a license from GE to produce GE models.

If they do more containers, that's going to be a big yawn for me.

I'm going to guess that 'Game Changing' will include operating class lights.

For all involved I certainly hope the samples are in house already for KC.

Little Joe. All the evidence is there: somebody designed one in shapeways, painted it, & ran it. Bingo! Think about it. The jinx works!

Yeah right. Well, I can dream.

Funny enough, they'd sell a ton of them. There is so much pent up demand. Especially if they were in the maroon striped scheme.

Actually, that'd be very bad. I'm so poor right now...

Nevermind, cancel that.
