Finally cleared off the cobwebs and mailed off an article on the Cumberland Shop Switcher.

Now that we have that over with...

There has to be something like that on this side of The Pond. The ever-watchful eye of the Centralia railcam has been seeing weirder and weirder MoW equipment go by over the last year, in the hands of private contractors as the RRs outsource more and more track maintenance. Some from a known supplier (like Plasser), some stuff is clearly home- (or shop-) brewed custom whatchamacallits, and there are other purpose-built contraptions on flanged wheels which I've never seen before. One such contraption is what I call a "tie shuttle" - a bunch of permanently-coupled low flatcars between two cabs, one with the propulsion unit, with a small traveling crane. I'll have to dig into the archives and post a frame grab.
