Grif Teller (make the sign of the Keystone in remembrance) was never one to let the actual Pennsy get in the way of a good Pennsy painting.   :D

He also famously painted a J on the P&T flyover at Whitford.

It's said that the J's couldn't clear the Rockville bridge duckunders on the way into Enola.

I have both of those beautiful calendars in my family room .... lucky me !

[sarcastic humor on]We all know that the only good steam power that the Pennsy had was leased from the Santa Fe...  :D [sarcastic humor off]

So when can I get a RTR 2-10-4?

Greetings,

So back to heavyweight cars.  Does anyone think there would be any interest in Microtrains producing a Pullman plan 3957 heavyweight parlor-observation such as the Queen Mary off the Detroit Arrow?   Even though Queen Mary is gone all 5 if the Wabash cars still exist, Two still working in New Orleans.  One New York Central car (30) still exists as CSX 10.

Thank you,
Bob L.

The Wabash and New York Central were the beneficiaries of these fine cars which was a 1 Drawing Room - 26-seat parlor observation, with only a total of 8 being built.  As for the former NYC 30 (which was modernized by NYC) it became PC 30 CR 10 and then CSX 994010 but even as NYC 30 it was quite different from its original appearance, at least on the drawing room side, with several windows being changed to be shallower... (image from Terry Link's Canada Southern site)

As for survivors there are only two other surviving cars, both of which having seen service on multiple roads and both modernized, though not to the extent of CR 10/CSX 994010.

Wabash City of LaFayette served under Norfolk & Western until it was leased and later sold to the Clinchfield, becoming CRR 114 White Oak and then Seaboard System 114 Blue Ridge before being placed on display in Fernandina Beach, FL. before being sold to the New Orleans Public Belt, which restored the car.

Wabash City of Wabash served under the N&W for a shorter period before it was sold to Keokuk Junction Rwy. where it remained until New Orleans Public Belt acquired it and restored it as well.  Its worth noting that neither car is in regular service and both were subject of being offered for sale after the head of NOPB was found to not handling money appropriately.  There was suppose to be an agreement for the cars to see use but I am uncertain if that was ever finalized.  The cars haven't been photographed in use in quite a while and a third parlor - DR car, the former Queen Ann/City of Peru faces a very uncertain future since the upset at NOPB.

It would be great if someone was to produce these cars, even if they were in their original form.  They were some beautiful cars to be sure, but I don't know what folks would think about such.  I know I would buy one but then, I'm already set to also acquire a Plan 4002, if everything goes right, and if I do it could interfere with the reason why I would buy one... just hard to say what I would do.

Anyone else interested in a model of these cars???

John

I would probably buy one, perhaps two, although I would be more interested in the Wabash modernized version.

4002 is a parlor-buffet-solarium, correct?  Is that in a manufacturer's plans?  Don't know that I have any use for one of those (my focus is the mid 50s), but might be interesting kitbash fodder.

I think you're speaking of our late Gregg Mahlkov, a.k.a. "3rdrail."

Sorry for the late reply. Exactly, I knew you would know. He was there and knew things that weren't recorded in a book or had a photo taken of, kind of like a WWII vet. When people like that are gone they take a piece of history with them.

The other guy I was thinking of was Jerry B., he is a big Pennsy varnish guy. He might have some knowledge on the BL.

Jerry,

Thank you for fixing my mistake on the Conrail CSX numbers, I have that information,  I think age is catching up with my mind.  Now on another note I have a drawing which says the New York Central ran two of these cars.  I suspect they were Pullman operated.  First I have listed Queen Isabella later Mohawk River, later Huron River.  Second I have Hudson River which was later Kalamazoo River, later Victoria Park then NYC 30.  NYC 30 may have started as Pullman Queen Elizabeth.  A small note says these cars were "for service in the Twilight Limited"  The drawing shows a different left side window configuration other than the picture of 30.    Perhaps someone here has a better timeline on the names.

I have seen 2 color pictures of Queen Mary on the rails.  First in Pullman Green with Pullman lettering with The Detroit Arrow on a keystone on its tail.  I have also seen Queen Mary in Pennsy Tuscan red but with no tail sign.

Here is why I said all five Wabash cars still exist although they are not all in running condition.   Since these were all renamed I'm using the last Wabash names.  As or a few minutes ago Louisiana and City of New Orleans are still shown as available for business meetings on the New Orleans Public Belt RR.  This accounts for City of Wabash and City of Lafayette.   Public Belt had City of Peru for parts, but I have not confirmed that they still do.  City of Danville is in Virginia with an open rear platform again.  City of Decatur is awaiting restoration in Monticello Illinois according to the Monticello Railroad Museum website.

I know Clinchfield ran one of these cars.  I guess in doing the modeling it will require a little research to know which side to put the roof hump on.  Then there is the question of as built or modernized windows and names.   I'm converting a Lima observation to City of Wabash but am not doing all the details.  I'm hoping for a  ready to run model that would look much better than my repeatedly reworked attempt.

Thank you all for you time and patience,
Bob L.
