Yes, double heading mundane K4s proved more reliable than the exotic T1s. There used to be a fellow, a true SPF, on this board and the A-board, that I'm pretty sure would have had first hand knowledge on the topic. Sigh, but I digress.

You have to remember that the PRR also used Alco, Baldwin and FM passenger units on their Blue Ribbon fleet and their reliability was not that great (especially the Centipedes).  So it wouldn't surprise me that more than 1 K4 rescued some of these trains.

He worked for Pennsy and later for the Apalachicola Northern.  I had the good fortune to meet him at a prototype meet in Cocoa Beach one year where I saw his kitbashed PRR equipment in person.  He was a very generous man with a wealth of information and photos.  He's as missed in Railwire circles today as he was the day he passed.

@dougnelson was nice enough to confirm for me that the ad I was referring to was from September 1948.  Diesels took over at least a year before the Kato-represented consist.

Having said all that, I do run my T1 at the head of those cars knowing full well that it's inaccurate.  Doesn't hurt my enjoyment!

Here's an update to my original post.  From MBK I have a K-4 and two sleepers coming.  From Walthers via the LHS I have a Baggage and RPO coming.  The great news is that, thanks to former RW member Roger Perkins (I miss him around here), I scored a Coach, a Diner, a Parlor and a 10-1 Sleeper at a shop in Peoria.

As luck would have it I will be in Peoria 9/26 to see "Kinky Boots" the musical based on a great British movie.  It's not as kinky as you might think.  It's about a son who suddenly inherits his father's failing show factory and, he like his father, couldn't bear to layoff the factory's workers.  They find a niche shoe market and (spoiler alert) the company is saved.  Great music and amazing choreography that involves dancing on and jumping back and forth among four moving conveyor belts. We've already seen the show in St. Louis but it was so good that we are seeing again (to see if it will play in Peoria).

Now all I really need is an Observation.

Ya know, that's one PRR class that I've never been able to get excited about. It's basically someone else's locomotive that's been Pennsy-ified. I'd much rather see doubled I's with another pushing on the back!
