Weekend Update 1/19/14

Busy week getting ready for Springfield; samples of the new GMD-1 to get ready; the new N scale display layout to finish; have to "oh and ah" my Prairie Shadows CPR/ CP Rail / TH & B / CN gondolas that Jeff just sent me and there's that new N scale announcement to get ready for the show.... Then again, busy is good.

I've been cleaning up the old Weathering Factory (i.e., a room in my basement) and getting ready for some massive weathering projects to start.  It's amazing how a few months of neglect can dirty up the place  

I also plan to start up some new weathering challenges to kick the new year off right.  Send me a pm if you have any suggestions.

Only managed to frame-up one wall in the workshop this week, discovering too late today I didn't have the right supplies to do the wall supporting the staircase. So, trip to Lowe's tomorrow. Wired temporary floodlighting in the layout room, prelude to removing the last two 8' florescent tube fixtures, in the way of removing the remaining old mezzanine joists.

Received a nice little package from Shapeways on Monday: two DD35 shells, to snap on modified Bachmann DDA40X chassis. Still rummaging around the kitchen for a tall, skinny jar for the Bestine soak... maybe I should just run to the supermarket and get some olives.

The big news this week is that an event that I've been dreading for a year and a half has finally happened. I didn't so much watch as listen in horror as my T1 ran through a misaligned trailing point turnout in the upper staging yard, drove itself off the bench work, bounced off a windowsill and crashed to the floor. Fortunately there doesn't seem to be any cosmetic damage. I need to disassemble it and make sure everything is aligned properly, but it does still run fine.  I think I lost a few years off my life there...

In positive news, earlier that day I got a visit from Master Fujiwara. After some tasty Kinder's ball tip sandwiches (no jokes unless you know the awesome that is the ball tip cut of steak) we adjourned to my place. There we made this:



Which was partially assembled into this:

Sounds like what happened to me when a kid nearly knocked my H10 off a bridge into a gorge.  Luckly it was on the outermost track and had the next one to catch it, but there was some faint paint scuffs.

I liked the look on the mother's face when I causally mentioned that it was a $500 engine.

Next up for this car are all the detail parts, and the deck load.

And, having completed the rivet decal marathon, I am now facing an even longer marathon - window glass.  Four for cable car BCOL 6504, ten for tool wash car BCOL 6506, fifteen for cook diner car BCOL 6508, and (gulp) twenty-four for each of the three museum train coaches.

This is my first attempt at the cab. I just acquired a set of decals to model NS 6920 so I decided to finally get a correct cab for it done, down to the last vent.
