A view through the newly planted forest area, looking down on a couple of hoppers (not in focus) at the coalmine.

I need a fog machine or a couple of  :ashat: s smoking cigars to properly set the mood for this shot, and a better depth of field.

"Is this an Army loco?"

Hmm... from the looks of
the guy in the upper left
taking a sledgehammer
to it, it must be a Navy
loco...

The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

Thanks, I can't take all the credit; when my friend, Joey Uboats, was over yesterday inspecting the changes to the layout, he said you have to try and take a picture from this angle. Took about a dozen attempts at lighting it before that shot came out.

Finally a use for that MTL Pennsy dry ice reefer that I've had sitting on a shelf for a decade.

I spent a good deal of hobby time this week doing deflection and stress calculations as I design a new return spring for "Train Order Semaphore Mark II".  As reference, here is what Mark I looks like:

I need 6 of these installed, with a couple of spares, in the next two months to meet my internal deadline for Vanrail 2013 in September.  I am flipping the design around so the "hot" Nitinol line is outside the mast instead of inside.  This should simplify the design overall and permit a faster response time but it does require a new spring design hence the calculations.

Other than that I put plaster down at Troup Junction to the East of Nelson and restaged the layout from last week's ops session.  As hoped, the new car forwarding system is much faster to restage.  While restaging I took a few photos...

...and took the opportunity to update the C&W Flikr album at http://flic.kr/s/aHsjqN8fVQ

phew...

Have a great weekend everyone!

Haven't modeled in months however I hung my CPR "The Canadian" drumhead.....

Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Today the track is laid for the Jersey City Industrial Railroad. A more detailed report is in the Layout Engineering section.

No modeling for me this week - assuming I get back to CHS at some point (currently stuck with no plane at IAD), we'll be beachin it one last time before we pack up and return to the DMV next week.

Well actually... I think I need both.  I am concerned that the operators won't pay attention to the semaphores and/or they will misread their indication.  So the drivers drive both the semaphores and facscia-mounted LEDs.

and here is how the system works...

I hope you find this interesting...

Mark, that semaphore is very cool, I mean hot, I mean cool! What a clever idea!

Not too much activity over the last few weeks..  Mainly the final installation of the benchwork and lighting over the workbench.

Also added a sub-layout storage shelf and organized all my projects into boxes.  Now lets see if I can keep things this organized.!
