Yea, you can more than likely count that stirrup out. Not going to make any promises, but we'll see what happens. There is one more thing I just noticed on the ladder. Looking in one of the NYC color guides at other Pacemaker cars, the ladder looks to be painted the body color, however, only the front face of the ladder is painted black. Then again, it is Friday and who knows if what I'm looking at is real anyway...

Someone must be listening, as the Atlas site now shows the door as all red! :D

I believe these 25 cars were delivered with cushion underframes, Lot 848-B.
FWIW: also delivered with low placards, Apex running-boards, Univeral brake wheels and A3 ride-control trucks.
Found a link from another thread on the Atlas forum of one (the AAR version that Intermountain issued) in 1967 with what appear to be black ends, or a least ends of one color?
http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/nyc/nyc175608ajs.jpg

I'll have to use the same technique on these couplers as on my, soon to be purchased, PRR X48s (hint).

I saved the thread where someone detailed how they used brass stock to create the coupler extensions, now I'll just have to dig it up. ;)

I think he was just saying that with the door the wrong color, the fact that it's 8' vs 6' doesn't stand out, not that it's the wrong width.

Yes the ladders can be painted, but the stirrup is part of the ladder and is a different color.

edit:  Don't forget to paint red below the door as well.

Jason

Correct.  I just meant that getting the door color right on that particular car is probably a lot more important than
2 scale feet on the width of the door.  If the door were the right color, but the wrong width, it would be a "lesser"
error.

I am duly impressed that Atlas has people closely monitoring what we say about their products, and that they take action to correct problems (like the NYC car door).   Thank you Cory, and Atlas in general.

Crap. More stuff I gotta get. Thankfully no N&W yet (says my wallet), but still some I gotta get.

(ya see, I sold all but a few of my Kadee/MTL 40' PS1 boxcars after I got a sample of the 1st release of these Atlas cars).

Thanks Atlas! :D

Same here.  Looks like I'm going to be averaging buying at least 5 per release.  Better sort through my MTL PS1s and get rid of them while they still have some value.

Let me know what you have. Take your time, though, cuz I just paid a huge Visa bill for 95 Atlas ore cars (ouch ouch ouch) and it'll take me a couple of weeks to recover.

Thanks Brian,
I thought I might have seen it online also at some point, but memory fails at every turn.

edit Found it! Gary Hinshaw covered it on this very forum!

I forgot about Gary's thread as well.  Definitely the best solution currently using standard affordable and accessible materials.

I agree with Mr Bussey's post as far as the NYC Pacemaker door size and paint.

Please Please PLEASE don't paint the roofs black like the IM's

A little suggestion for the Atlas folk is to contact Noel Widdifield, Editor of NYCentral Modeler at NYCHS.

Noel's email:NYCBigFour@comcast.net

He and they are attempting to work with all scale model manufacturers to supply them with as much accurate information as possible. This is something they haven't been able to do well in the past. While your at it, you might ask them if a special run is in their future for N-scalers.  :D

I vote to leave the ladders same as body color

Question about the NYC pacemaker scheme: was this a special service car? Or was it just a slogan car which could be seen all over the US?

Various websites have stated that this scheme was at first kept on NYC rails ...

Much of this is a rehash from the IM post war cars.

From what I can gather-

The  following were black:

Ladders (not just the face), grabs (but not the supports), brakewheel, running board, and roof (car cement).

The roof is oversprayed from the the sides and ends which makes it hard to find anything that's 100%.  One of the better shots (maybe there's a way to request a larger picture) is the following:

If you knew nothing about the subject and were told that had a black roof, you wouldn't question it.  There are several pictures that depict a black running board, which wouldn't really be in sync with a red roof.

Jason, You may be assuming a bit much....

This is why I suggested Atlas contact NYCHS for validation.

I might add,

According to the Authors of "Freight Equipment of the New York Central" Vol. 1 and I quote, "NYC 174479 was photographed in about 1948 after being painted with a red top and door and gray bottom half" However, the pic they are referencing is black and white  :|

The color early pics I have in my NYC library all show red running boards. If you like, I can reference them for you.

I have confidence that Atlas will try to get it right.

Nice pic of the PS car with 8ft door though....

Possibly, but I can only go what I read and see.

If you have a color picture of a new car that show a red running board in the middle of the car, not just on the ends, that's a picture I would be interested in seeing for sure.

If it doesn't meet the above, it's doesn't really clear much up unfortunately.
