The color early pics I have in my NYC library all show red running boards. If you like, I can reference them for you.

If by 'reference' you mean 'post' so they can be seen, or 'post a link' where they can be seen, yes please do.

There are several pictures that depict a black running board, which wouldn't really be in sync with a red roof.

Depends on if the appliances were installed before or after painting...

I guess if there was ever an exception to any 'rules' this would be the car, but I can't think of another case where the roof of a box car was painted the body color and the running board was painted black.

Correct.  I just meant that getting the door color right on that particular car is probably a lot more important than
2 scale feet on the width of the door.  If the door were the right color, but the wrong width, it would be a "lesser"
error.

This is still where you lose me. The NYC had a small group of Pacemaker Service cars with 8' doors. Our model has an 8' door...

The photo Jason posted is pretty definitive from what I can see.  This was a small class of 25 cars.  I don't know the history of the class specifically, whether these cars always were in interchange service or not.  But the scheme on the Atlas model is of a car in interchange service, as is the car in the photo.  The roof, roofwalk, stirrups, grabs and ladders in the photo are black.  One has to assume the brakewheel is also, which was the Pacemaker standard.  It doesn't matter if the overwhelming majority of the Pacemakers featured a red roof -- it only matters whether or not this small class of Pacemakers did.  The evidence suggests this small class featured a black roof during the era they were in interchange service.

To those SPFs lamenting the fact that there is no Pennsylvania in the first release of cars with eight-foot doors ... as with the first PS-1 release, Prototype N Scale Models is piggy-backing a special-run three-pack -- the Pennsy X48!  As with the silver Western Pacific cars, the cost plus S&H will be the same as the MSRP of the stock Atlas model.  Here is the press release from earlier today:

I am excited to announce my very first Pennsylvania Railroad car!

This will be an X48 40' PS-1 boxcar with an 8' door, to be released with the Atlas regular production cars around November 2013.  I will be doing three road numbers for this run.

The prototype was built in February 1954 and was the very first PRR car to use the "Shadow Keystone" logo.  I have a B&W jpeg of the prototype if you want to see it.

If you have yet to see any of the new Atlas PS-1 cars you have missed a real treat.  Incredible detail, metal wheels, body mounted couplers, Superb!

My three car set will sell for $59.95 (Atlas list price on the new PS-1 cars is $26.95)
I will have some single cars from the set available for $20.95 each.

Shipping/Handling is $7.00, I accept checks, money orders, PayPal and credit cards.

Ha! Thanks, Bryan, again for posting that here. It all added up in my head just before you posted it here in this thread. I was about to do the same until you did it.
I just emailed and put in a preorder.

I requested the builder's photo that George mentioned. It's a 2MB shot with a high resolution. Looks great!

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

This should be the same car.

Jason

That pic looks like these cars featured the 'SK1a' scheme of the road number painted in script/calendar numbers as opposed to the 'SK1b' scheme of roman serif road numbers, cool!

What's not correct about it?  That's a photo of the actual prototype.  If the model matches that, it's accurate.
