Kato: SD40-2 ReRuns Coming!

They'll probably restock the undec shells, you'll have to be diligent watching the parts page, as I'm sure they'll sell out quickly.

I don't understand some of the road names either, it almost seems Kato runs obscure roads to keep models available for those of us who strip and repaint???

I am glad they're re running the early units, though.

Wow, what years is this paint scheme good for?  Post '82 I know, but you might need pictures of the year you model to figure anything beyond that.

If they had come out with Illinois Central and MoPac and high hood Southerns (not a chance in hell), I'd be strongly tempted to change my era from 1971 to 1972.

'72 still wouldn't be late enough for IC ('75) and MoPac ('73).

is cheered for runnng obscure roadnames.  Kato is crucified for obscure roadnames.  Granted that Kato leaves many roadnames 'on the table'. 

If Kato were to run Conrail SD 40-2s with incorrect trucks the need for extra security at the gates to prevent a breach by torch and pitchfork wielding villagers means no chance of profit for the next decade.  Designing a special frame for Conrail seems like something the RP community would be great at.  Shapeways appears to have a metal option for jewelry, so no casting would be required.  Properly designed it would be a hot rod like process of taking a SD40-2 and some parts department items combined into your vision of a Conrail correct SD40-2.

Ever wonder if Kato executives take a fiendish kind of pleasure in the angst of RailWire posters?  I have to imagine some of these posts are provide great entertainment to them...

If they were going to do still more UP, why not make it the SD40M?  That at least would be something we could run on a modern layout.

Well the UP units are ex-CNW units.  So technically they are "modern" UP.

Easiest way to do a Conrail one, take a snoot, cut the nose down to 88" and swap out the HTC trucks with Flexicoils from the SD40/45.  You can do it with the early and snoot frames, its the mid production with the "shock absorber" frame that makes it difficult.

It is in what the CNW Historical Society refers to as old yellow (OY). So that scheme is good for as delivered through the UP merger. According to thier CNW Final Motive Power Roster, number 6847 remained in OY until the end. Number 6858, however, was repainted in the modern "Traditional Yellow" in the early-mid 90s, not sure of the year. The font size on side appears a smidgen too large, but that's an easy fix.

Good for those of you who are getting SD40-2s in schemes you wanted.  Unfortunately, for me, there's no roads offered that I can make use of.  Oh well, I guess I can wait another sixteen years for the next run.

alternately, if you want to convert a snoot, early prod. or other model to a mid-production unit without the truck changes, anti-climber, etc... mark 4 tooled up some 88in short hoods (with brakewheel) and corrugated radiators for me as well.

As delivered would have the "Employee Owned" herald, so at least the first 8 12 years are out (6847 had Employee Owned until at least '85). 

But that's good to know that it made it the rest of it's career in this scheme.
