Kato Tweets E5 pic. I'm officially concerned.

I'm pretty sure the vents next to the headlight should be just painted, not actual vents (they were red then painted black later.....or the other way around, I can never remember).  If the model has actual "vents" molded into the shell, I don't think it's correct.  Hope they double checked the prototype.  Perhaps I'm wrong?  Skibbe would be the one to confirm this.

I think the original E5s did had separate, actual grilles applied.  Later units (E7-E9) had painted grills to mimic the look.  The look comes from the original shovel nose units back to the Pioneer Zephyr and carried through to the red stripe scheme.

That OMI brass one and the KATO certainly do appear to look a little different.  That could be lighting, glare, angle...
Not to say that brass importers are immune from mistakes.

After looking at a bunch of pictures, there's so much off on the nose, I have to assume it's the picture.  Namely the lens warping the front of the engine.

Well what I'm seeing is that the nose isn't nearly slanted enough in that picture and I can't believe they wouldn't get that right.  So I want to think the lens has warped the front of the locomotive which has also made the top look longer.

I hoping it will be okay since I haven't bought a passenger set since the first CZ.  I'm also hoping that mold line won't be on the regular production.

The "vents" were only painted on the prototype E5 to replicate the look from the original CB&Q streamliners, i.e., the Pioneer Zephyr and the Twin Cities Zephyr trainsets.

Very possible, and, as already suggested, it's worth waiting to see the actual model before passing further judgment.

This was purely a painted on detail that the "Q" did on these units and not actual vents.  If they were actual vents I would suspect that you would find them on other E-units as well, besides, if they were vents and not painted on trim why take the time to paint them on later on in the units' life since such a change usually would not be warranted, judging from other painted trim on other various units the road owned.

My first impression was nice detail, followed by something looks odd about the nose. Slant does look a little conservative from that angle but what is messing me up is how large/tall the windshield area looks.

I'm hoping it is just a bad camera angle and wide angle view that is messing with things.

I should have chosen different words perhaps.  Let's try again.  The faux vents are a separately applied panel on an as-built E5.  There is an actual stamped metal plate, bolted to the nose, that has the painted on grill.  That's what Kato has molded into the shell and it can be made out in this photo posted earlier in the thread. 



Later they were simply painted on the nose without the separate metal plate.

Were there different bodies or versions of the E5?

The loco in David's picture doesn't have the pronounced point/peak at the front of the loco. It looks more like a continuous smooth curve. The headlight is also straight up and down where the other loco has a swept back look. The roof radiator vents are flat on one, curved on the other. I wonder if we are dealing with two versions of the loco?

The nose headlight is obsuring the point where the nose would be peaked, so I'm not sure you can say definitely that the nose is rounded in this photo.  When you're up higher, as in the donsdepot shot, you can see the peak.  The roof vents were changed out in later years.

Note that the truck skirts are removable!

EDIT: Appears to be two different releases.  The journal covers on the trucks are different.
