Kato Tweets E5 pic. I'm officially concerned.

I never knew the E5 had skirting on teh trucks.

From my untrained eye, I would say the real E5 has a nose that tapers more quickly to the side; long and thin to the short and wide of the E8

Yeah, it almost looks like a PA nose. I share the concern.

I do notice more metal lip above and below the windshield , but it is still a beauty , and with N , Nuttins Perfect ..... ever .

Looks like maybe in the earlier years there was a skirting over the trucks.  This was the only picture I could find with them still attached, so I'm guessing the skirting was short lived.  Maybe the guys who maintained her complained that they got in the way?

Were there different bodies or versions of the E5?

The loco in David's picture doesn't have the pronounced point/peak at the front of the loco. It looks more like a continuous smooth curve. The headlight is also straight up and down where the other loco has a swept back look. The roof radiator vents are flat on one, curved on the other. I wonder if we are dealing with two versions of the loco?

I wouldn't get worked up over one photo at an angle that makes it virtually impossible to guess the angle.

When we see more, then may be the time to form stronger opinions.

I'm going to guess that Kato had technicians crawling all over the prototype taking measurements just to get it right.  I'm highly impressed with the tooling, and although it doesn't "look right" to me either, I can't put a finger on exactly why.  I'm thinking it's because I've never seen a prototype photo at that angle.

Mo' photos from Kato will be anticipated.

My only negative comment is that I hope this isn't the "Western Railroad Train and New Engine" the Kato rep at the WGH Show was talking about, 'cause I'm planning on Kato producing the FEF-3 (844) and U.P. Heritage train he told several of us Utah N-scalers was definitely going to be produced in the first quarter of next year.

Interesting.  Notice that on the Don's Depot photo, the vents next to the headlight appear to be just stripes applied to the sheet metal.  And on closer inspection, the same appears to be true for the one in the shot on RailPictures.  In the shot that David posted, it sure looks like a real vent, or at least 3D, like on the model.  As for the nose angle though, you have to allow for some lens distortion, especially for a quickie shot that looks likely to have been taken using a camera phone.  Regardless, I think the angle looks pretty close and once we see some official high-quality photos at some proper angles we'll be able to get a better idea.

pwnj beat me to it. It does look like the picture was taken from a camera phone, so you Im guessing a very wide angle lens which does not do anything good for photos and being held to close to the subject as we all know makes for major distortion. I say wait for "official" photos lol.

I'm pretty sure the vents next to the headlight should be just painted, not actual vents (they were red then painted black later.....or the other way around, I can never remember).  If the model has actual "vents" molded into the shell, I don't think it's correct.  Hope they double checked the prototype.  Perhaps I'm wrong?  Skibbe would be the one to confirm this.

Considering this locomotive is 40 minutes from Schaumburg, I think they did they're homework.

It must have been posts like that that made the Model160 forum such a success. 


After looking at a bunch of pictures, there's so much off on the nose, I have to assume it's the picture.  Namely the lens warping the front of the engine.
