Weekend Update 5/20/12

Hi all; nothing to report again this weekend... my 5 acres is still in limbo but it looks like it will be closed by the end of the week.
I did spend some time figuring out how to post photos here...

Reading this thread, I followed the link to the Train Cat website, http://traincat2.com/ . I had never been to it... WOW!!! Bob you make some beautiful stuff and, considering the intricacy, very reasonably priced too.

David... Too bad about the UPS incident. I wish you the best of luck with getting some type of compensation.

Mark... Your machine shop is fantastic. I love how you recreated EVERYTHING. I'm not sure how a person would go about modelling the high clearance sprayer. Photo etched booms and bashing some GHQ components, maybe (looks like a good start would be their 7800 John Deere tractor or their Versatile 4WD)?

Dave V... What did you use to string your power poles? they look great!

Andy... That super elevation is just right! It really captures the prototype look.

Sincerely sorry for your loss. That is really sad. I did have Fed Ex badly damage a $300K piece of scientific equipment that was shipped in a custom designed and padded case. To this day I don't know how that happened but it did. Glad your G&D layout survived.

David, so sorry to hear about the damage.  Sadly no amount of compensation will restore the time you put into that gem (but it may help ease the pain a bit).

I happened to pass one of those sprayers this weekend and thought of you and what it would take to build it.  Keep going, you make it look almost easy.

Dave- I know how much it sucks getting stuff broken in transit.  Moved plenty and never failed to have something broken.  Normally something not worth the hassle to get replaced, but in your case HIT em hard.

Having been fortunate enough to experience the JRB in person, I too mourn its loss.  Pick up the pieces and press on, David.  And yes, heed well the advise to substantiate your claim with the volumes of documentation you've created.

For me, not much on the choo choo front this week, although I did get to stop by Star Hobby and finally purchase a new WM caboose from the Bach Mann.  Pretty kissy. 

Also enjoyed frittering away about 3 hours trackside at St. Denis with Carl.  Caught a couple of trains, and lots of good chatter about cars, music and other mysteries.  Always a pleasure.

I, too, also was lucky enough to see the James River Branch in person.  I was in awe of its detail and excellent modeling on such a small scale.  It makes me ill thinking of the loss, but I don't blame you for just wanting to salvage what you can and writing it off.  I'm sure that your new obligations with NZT will make it near impossible to find the time to go back and rebuild.  Might as well move on with the bittersweet satisfaction that it was fortunately well documented online.  Hope you can get a fair settlement from UPS.

DKS, that's horrible about the James River branch.  Thankfully, as DFF said, it is well documented and will continue to inspire people regardless of it's fate.

As for myself, I haven't done a darn thing to my layout except run trains, but I did order an atlas trainman set for my daughter so she can play and learn without destroying her father's models.  I have to say, I am very impressed with this set and I think I got a decent deal on it ($90 shipped).  It looks like Lily approves as well.

dave, that is aweful about the loss of the JRB. I've been fortunate enough to never have a problem with UPS, but after hearing about this, well, I'll be steering towards the USPS even more.
Nothing really from me; spent most of Saturday at Discover Clemson. I really enjoyed it and Clemson is now my #1 choice for college.
I have found a railroad I really like though; the St Maries River Railroad. I accidentally discovered it on Youtube, and it fits about 90% of what I'm looking to be able to get out of a layout. I wrote up a blog post with more thoughts on it (http://theswitchinglayout.blogspot.com/2012/05/st-maries-river-railroad-introduction.html). Now I need to figure out how much space to devote to the layout, and what kind of benchwork to use (I'm about to start a thread on that, actually). Then it's how to compress the scenes. So expect some planning updates from me for a little while.
