An in progress shot of a Milwaukee Road rebuilt rib side hopper. The Milwaukee had a modest fleet of 2 bay offset side hoppers. They were rebuilt around 1969-72 in the Milwaukee shops into rib side hoppers. The offset sides were cut off, and about 16 inches was added to the total height of the car, which increased in capacity to 55 tons. These cars were used primarily in coal, gravel and limestone service, but they were also used to ship cullet (broken glass) from the Schlitz brewery. Still need to add a bit of putty to the seams, add grabs, and the air line. I am going to try to cut the lettering out of white decal paper using my Silhouette, since they need to be applied one letter at a time anyway.

There were a couple of different rib configurations, but this was a common one. Note that ends of this one have been rebuilt, but many had the original ends with panels added on (the way I did it).

Best wishes, Dave

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Amtrak's on the Sub today.  The detour rounds Wedding Cake Curve - a daylighted tunnel.

I spent Saturday at the Ohio N Scale weekend in Columbus.  Great show and great layouts from a number of NTrak groups but it's getting crowded in the 2 buildings alloted to the show.

I spent a few $$ and ran a few hours on the Burning River layout.

Next year there is promised more space in Springfield, Ohio,  May 3 - 5, 2013.

Some pics from the show:

That artwork looks great Bob.  It looks like you've included end sills with grab irons - very nice.  I'll be in for a bunch of both of those.  Will they be stainless steel?

Well, this was not the best of weekends for me. I finally got a chance to uncrate my layouts after their return trip from Denver. I started with the Geordie & Daphne, as the box was on top, and the layout was in perfect condition. So imagine my surprise when I opened the second box and found... the James River Branch layout almost completely destroyed. I swear, UPS must have kicked the crate from Denver back to NJ. I must declare it a total loss; it would take months to repair, whereas some very rare and valuable items have been smashed beyond repair. I must now begin the process of documentation so that I can file a claim with UPS... if that indeed goes anywhere. It was insured for $10,000, but I can't imagine them handing over a check with a pleasant "have a nice day" anytime soon.

DAMN, sorry to hear that David.  Someone at UPS must pay.  Once had a box containing a ship model shipped from San Francisco back to DC by FEDEX and they did the same thing.

Ugh.  That's horrible.

The shipping companies seem very good at finding fault of the packaging style/type/quantity.

Not long ago I had a run-in with one of them.  I had received a pallet load of products and several of the boxes were damaged BUT they had been turned so the damaged areas all pointed towards the center of the pallet.

How one of the forks from a forklift managed to pierce the boxes from the center is a quite a mystery.  :x

I brought it to the attention of the driver and he basically said the company wouldn't do squat for me.
