Weekend Update 2/19/12

This week I finished up a wiring project in the yard and finished off the benchwork underneath Glen Alden (yeah, i can now put christmas decorations away underneath the layout).

I also decided I need to find a way to get out and see/operate on Mark Dance's Pike.

This was one of the iconic pieces from the Bufkin Collection... the siderods were already half off, the motor was shot, and the tender was missing (the tender in the shot is from a Rivarossi engine that gave its life to the K-2 project).

I've got a few more things I'm putting to good use in this manner... details to emerge in the 12x12 challenge.

You didn't even need to include a tender in the picture.  You (our resident recycler) should know all about repurposing.  It's possible that the tender would end up in other duty, e.g., maintenance of way use.

This week I got several projects under way and or finished...

First is a couple of pulpwood loads, modified as suggested by Lee Weldon, ( Thanks & congrats on 10,000 )



Next is another trainman box, roofwalk removed, renumbered, faded and rusted...(new one is on left...)



Next is a Atlas Precision Design bow that I picked up at Springfield for 8$...new....
Here it is after some weathering....



A few weeks ago I got some very nice compliments about the weathering on this RS-11, but it wasn't done yet.....
Here I have added some of the base color showing through, and washes to the grills.....
Almost there.....I want to add coupler lift bars and MU hoses and then dirty up the pilots more....

I am getting my switching ladder for my new passenger teriminal figured out.  Made some design progress last night.  Nothing really to take pictures of as no scenery work completed yet.  I have a bad habbit of building a section and having to run it awhile before deciding to keep it.  Once I get through this whole process than I can start the scenery.  A long process for me unfortunately.

I finished this pair of Illinois Central E9's this weekend.  Still have a few minor things to fix, but it's at the 90% solution.  I almost forgot to close in the windows on the side, but a sharp chisel blade and some squadron putty fixed that right up.

Thank you for the kind words.

I truly appreciate all the feedback from this and other forums.  I find compliments and criticisms from peers very motivating.  I also get a lot of joy watching visiting operators interacting with the layout.  If the layout runs well, the operators enjoy themselves, and they can recognize and enjoy the modeling, then I am happy.

Like many of us I am sure, I am smitten by the prototype.  And when I compare the C&W to its prototype, all I can see are the flaws and things I wish had done differently.  So not proud for sure, but very happy when I can share the layout and it achieves its objectives.

Over the past week or so I completed a major realignment and elevation of the Allegheny Eastern mainline. All of the photos are Work In Progress, wishing the workmanship could match the other layouts posted here. Hope I haven't posted too many photos!

Those are very nice looking locos!  I see these often in the fall when people from IC come to town for Illinois football weekends.  My understanding is this train is used to transport the big wigs around, but since the CN take over I'm not sure who all is on board.  Somewhere I have some pics of the prototype, but from memory they look great, something that is on my to do wish list as well.  Can I ask, what did these start as?

I got some track painted and started putting down some base scenery. I also added 3 railcar loading doors to AG of New England.

Some big power comes off the main line to drop its train for the Simonds IT

They started out as Union Pacific Kato E8/9's and I just went off pictures from the net to get the rest.  It's not 100% accurate, but it's close enough for my taste and the person I did them for.  From the photos I've seen, there is some really funky stuff up on the roofs.  Microscale makes the decals (60-4144), including the nose stripe.  I didn't want to strip the shells since Kato still has undecorated ones available, so I went that route as well.
