MC for President...Grandkids are here this weekend and we are building
some Osborn Models telephone poles...Letting them dry, painting them
and replacing my oversized handmade ones. We have quite an assembly
line going. Dip each toothpick pole in CA, push into crossarm and stick
in foam. No one CA'ed any appendages...So it's a good day.

What do you know? I am actually getting modeling done on a weekend. It only took catching the flu! Anyway, wife and kids have vacated the place for a less hazardous locale leaving me bored silly and not expected to do anything constructive. Hows that for a trade off? 36 hours of 103 fever and associated fun gets me about 12 hours of modeling time....By the way Tamiflu works like a charm. Cant say I would be up for even this if that stuff didn't work. Building my second lazer kit ever and painting some MTL gondola loads.

15 cm's of fresh snow yesterday so mommy and son blew outta here with the dawn patrol for the slopes.... me; coffee and headed to the train cave.... actually got some work done and some running to boot......

Coal drag got diverted to our sub....

and looky what was on her tail....

I finished the plywood sheathed van; having begun life as a Roundhouse wooden van it has been sanded within an inch of it's life and then skimmed with putty to give the sides an uneave texture, like bulging plywood... didn't turn out quite like I'd hoped but it's ok. The cupola was raised to emulate the CPR high cup vans and all running boards and ladders were removed per the prototype. She's carrying the markers for this lovely little coal drag... another van to add to the sub.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

I think I finished my trailer and Shapeways got their upload back online.  It ends up being ~$21 for FUD which seems like a lot until I remember its 60' long.

Shapeways seems to base a lot on the volume.  After going in and clearing an extra 0.0137" on the inside on the roof, it knocked off $3.  Crazy.

Jason

Doesn't that seem logical that the cost would be largely based on how much material was used?

It's quite definitely calculated based on material volume; complexity has virtually no influence. When I made this building skeleton, it cost me around $80. I made the floors half as thick, and the price dropped almost exactly half.

It does absolutely, but for some reason I thought I kept reading a lot about triangles (or polygons) which isn't necessarily dependent on volume.  Now my model and your building are just a bunch of rectangles.  Perhaps when models get into more rounded shapes and decisions have to be made about how much resolution to give, the price will be effected apart from just the volume.

The actual surprise was seeing the cost reduction for something that seemed so minor.  I was expecting nickles and dimes not dollars.  I guess if I knew I was removing ~12% of the material it wouldn't have caught me off guard.

The number of triangles has an upper limit of one million; it doesn't affect pricing.

Armed with sheets of paper, turnout templates and marker pens, I started sketching out the track arrangements for the west end of Fort St. John yard.  I removed the hillboard that had hidden the Fort Nelson sub main line (It seemed like a good idea at the time) and will screen it with a tree lined road instead.

Apart from the fan of industrial spurs which curve the same way as the prototype, all other trackage had to be bent the wrong way (south instead of north), but it doesn't bother me as much as I thought now that I can see it laid out.
