Weekend Update 2/6/11

Great work everyone.  I finished putting down some foam and rock castings for a lake scene yesterday



This was followed by a coat of brown paint and some fine ground foam as a base. 



I rejected most of the foam colors as too vivid, and went with WS earth and burnt grass only.  Still seems a little too green to me.



Next I need to stain the rocks, put in static grass, paint the track, ballast, finish the bridge, paint the lake, tree line on the backdrop, and plant a forest of trees...  So much to do!

I've been procured to take pictures to update our local HO model railroad club.  I decided it'd be a good time to grab some of my stuff that's been sitting on shelves that last few years, and snap away.  I was 17 or 18 when I painted these back in the mid 90's.

A night of cutting, sanding, measuring, more sanding and more measuring has resulted in short hood #2 complete with marker lights and a much happier me.



Using this style market light makes this ex-M&St.L #300.  I don't get to use a Hancock Air Whistle like on #301 which is kind of a bummer.  I may need to look into some exhuust stack extensions or spark arrestors, I can't tell yet.

Thinks . Not a clue Chris , it's on its sister 1243 but in a slightly different location and quite a bit thinner . Could it be vent steam from the air pumps with most of the pipe under the jacket ?

It's not photo worthy, but I did a bunch this week.

Last weekend I picked up my Digitrax Zephyr, and while I was at it, I grabbed a pair of the Atlas Maryland Midland SD24s. The MMID only had them for a short time, but given the alternate reality of my broad NCR concept, they stuck around longer than they did in real life, and they would be showing up in York, on the "to be modeled" portion of the layout. That means that seeing them on sale meant "happy birthday to me".

Combining the two purchases, I did my first install and program of some decoders. JMRI and the PR3 made it quick and easy. Now if only I could get the JMRI throttles to work, I could run them with my Droid, and I'd REALLY be living in the 21st century.

Started work on the 14-foot-long New Haven section of the layout.  I'm building a section at a time, similar to the methods Tim used for his BCR Dawson Creek.



I put together a paper to-scale mock-up of New Haven Union Station for placement purposes.



The building didn't look this large during planning, but it still works.

I've tried the iPhone app on my layout. It takes a little getting used to, but it's a good little app. My main beef with it is that if the phone shuts off, it sends out a command to stop the train. I get why it does that, but it's a pain if you're trying to conserve battery power.

Not much here. Swapped a pair of Atlas Blombergs onto one of my WallyLike GP18s and did test runs.

I'm looking at swapping out a bunch of Atlas "fast" motors for slowmo motors. Placed order with Atlas parts for same.

Also ordered accumate couplers for my late 1990s Atlas undec locos. Gonna start hi-nosing the fleet soon.

Continued re-org of train room.
