So question...is there a topic about these cars with regards to the prototype?  I am curious if I need any of these.  A lot of the traffic on the line I model is PNW to Gulf so it's conceivable....lot of centerbeam and newer hi-cube paper traffic now so in '98 I'd say these would be a good possibility if not today.  Thinking BCR or Boise Cascade look "familiar" just not sure if these cars commonly made it to Texas or not.  BCR and BC cars were/are common but just not sure of the specific car.

The MDW/Boise Cascade cars would have primarily been used in service from Minnesota or Nothern Ontario (they're lettering for international service and were probably loaded at Kenora, ON). They were also by the way sold to CP and numbered CPAA 86000-86091 in 1987.

The British Columbia Railway cars are accurate, but most were rebuilt with new doors.

Well; you certainly would not have PGE cars of this nature in 98. The CP Rail cars would (I stand to be corrected) have been sold to the QR so they'd have been relettered, although not re-painted. The CN's would be substantially the same.....

My recollection is that the CN, CV and DWC cars were used interchangably - seen in strings on Conrail in the Northeast...

Pretty much. And the CNIS, DWC and CVC marks all specifically meant International Service.

Only about half of the CP cars were sold to Quebec Gatineau. A number of photos of these cars in the 2000s are here. The CP cars were originall CPI (International Service again) but all renumbered CP in the early 1980s, then half were sent to QGRY in 1998:

Agreed- I have a train video of CP's D&H north end from the early 2000's showing these in both CP and QGRY marks so they were still around in CP markings.

The PGE cars came in two orders:

1967 PGE 4601-4642 with Camel internal frame (flush) plug door
1969 PGE 4651-4750 with YSD external frame (recessed) plug door

The PGE and BCOL sets each include two cars from the first series and four cars from the second series.

All cars were delivered in PGE Freight Car Red with the B&W map herald.  From 1972 cars were either repainted in BCR Light Green with the dogwood logogram, or were re-stencilled BCOL with the map herald painted out in red primer.  I would estimate that somewhere between half and two-thirds of the fleet would have been repainted or re-stencilled.  From 1979 a few cars were repainted in BCR Dark Green with the dogwood logogram, and after 1986 the BC Rail logogram was applied to one or two cars.

I have seen pictures of these cars on Vancouver Island, and back east in Ontario.  I do not know how often they would have gone down to the U.S., but it is not inconceivable.  The lumber and venerr-carrying boxcars would have been far more common in a place like Texas.

In 1989 these cars were selected for a rebuild program.  A total of 135 cars were completely reconditioned for pulp service and re-equipped with a 10 foot wide Teams free rolling door.  They were repainted BCR Dark Green with the BC Rail logogram and renumbered in the 46000-46134 series.  The rebuild program was generally unsuccessful due to excessive weight on the floor, and a number of the cars were subsequently cycled into MOW service.

The rebuilt cars could be modelled fairly easily by scratchbuilding the Teams free rolling door.  It is identical to the alternate eight foot door provided in the Kaslo Shops combination door boxcar, but two feet wider.

I hope that this answers people's quesions regarding the PGE/BCR cars.

Simon (Sir Tainly) came over this afternoon with several of the PGE-BCR newsprint cars so that we could take some photographs for those who would like to see them.

Here is one of the PGE cars with the YSD external frame plug door:

Here is one of the BCOL cars with the Camel internal frame plug door.  This car matches the one in the prototype photograph I posted:

The paint and stencilling on these cars is very well done in my opinion.  The ride height is definitely a concern and when I get my cars I will have to investigate how to correct it.

So, where on the east coast of the USA might these have been seen in 1973?

The ride height is scary nasty ain't it? While I "fixed" mine by switching floors this was the main reason I only bought 2 of these (despite heavy use of these by CP on the area I model during my time-frame). At the cost per car that ride height is.... well, not good.
