Built the switchback last night...  Running to a meeting... will post photos later.

The switchback tail is enough to handle 5 hoppers and a locomotive.  The middle track will house the old Farmer's Co-Op and a team track, the coal tipple is in the rear.

While I was soldering, I worked up a few of these to protect rolling stock from the forces of gravity...

I like it. I really like the Kingsford inclusion. Gives a little variety. Now you just have to bury the whole area under a ton of ash.

How are you going to hide its proximity to the skyboard?

other than that, i really, really like this part of the layout the best - it has enough visual interest, enough complexity to keep operations interesting, and it can be a great scene for main line trains to pass.

The Kingsford plant will be typical WVa industrial building, old brick structure with modern metal siding additions.  It will be a 3-D flat, roughly 18" long.  The big metal warehouse will be to the rear, then a couple of brick loading dock annexes, and the 2 story office structure in the front, facing a highway.

I'm thinking some Walther's modulars.

No, you can see where the abutment will hit just above the end of the switchback tail.  there will be judicious use of foliage and land forms to disguise the tail from the best photo angles for the bridge.

and i woudl trim that tail track back so you can have 4.5 cars and a loco.  it's creeping into the other scene too much as the S pointed out.

Sorry man, it's way to far out. IMHO I should be able to face the bridge parallel and see it unobstructed from end to end. It's the crescendo in the whole shebang. Make the switching interesting make it three cars and a loco.

Form follows function on the operations based model railroad.  There's actually room for 6 or more 55 t cars.  Haven't sized it with 70T cars yet...

@Ed, yes it does.  It's a curvy railroad built for tonnage, not for speed.  When I model the NEC, I'll be sure to mend my ways!
