Weekend Update - 12-20-2009

I need to get my meager contribution out of the way before digging into the kitchen project today, so I guess I start this...

Installed decoders in my brace of SD24s and ran them enough to find (and fix) a noisy bearing in one. Grimaced slightly when I finally realized that #448 was a straight-across UP paint job on the SOU version, and needs to have the horn moved and a winterization hatch added. (But props to Atlas for the astute observation that the 448 had the Southern-style high-short-hood bell.)

Did a little layout planning, resigned to do something on a 4x8 to tide me over until construction on the real layout space (30x30) is far enough along to start something.

Completed a few more re-engineered (read salvaged)buildings for the layout I'm building as a gift for my son's best buddies 7th birthday....

His father was a motor bike racer and tinkerer in his youth so....







Beside it will be his son's favorite TV character's tool shop....





A couple more buildings to fix up and then we'll be ready for the "building phase"....

I also ran some geeps one night as I watched McCartney's "Good Evening New York City" DVD... Paul's still got it....

It was another busy week of school events for me, but I did manage to get the voltage output from my Lenz system stepped down to 11 volts.  I used the Ramp Meter to confirm the change:




Two weeks of holidays lie ahead.  After getting the apartment put back together following the flood I hope to have some quality modelling time.

When I woke up this morning I had 11 inches . After dealing with that I am out of breath and my back hurts .

Some may not post shots given the snow and Christmas thing , so I submit this as a filler .

The impending holiday and the snow storm have monopolized my time this week.

However, whilst Christmas shopping, I made a discovery that carries great potential for a long-planned modeling project.

It's called an Eye-Clops...
 


It's a micro-video projector sold as a toy, and thus is far more affordable than its professional, grown-up counterparts. Of course, it's performance is in keeping with its price, but for the project in mind, this doesn't matter one bit. More here: http://1-160.blogspot.com/2009/12/toy-story.html

I never really liked how this dirt crossing turned out. I've always meant to replace it..


I made a template so I could get the size right, cut the strips from a sheet of northeastern scale lumber sheet, and applied them to double sided tape.  Then after scraping away the original ballast and applying a dark wash.


After some more ballast and grass applied, I dusted the crossing a bit with some colored grout.

Currently working on a module for photo and video purposes.  Here are the concrete bridge abutments (thanks to Ian's technique of using anchoring cement).  The "mold" was designed as a solid model and the generated in rapid prototype resin.  The indication of the build layers in the RP gave the texture I desired on the abutments.  I'm waiting on Micro-Engineering bridge shoes to arrive from MBK.

No new photos.  I've been building and painting some Showcase Miniatures trucks.  Unlike you folks back east, we're having a brief reprieve from winter, so it's been good to be outside in the sun and warmth (mid 50s).

Finally got around to doing some work for myself.  Spent way too much time doing work for others and ended up burned out.  Back on track though, been working on scenery for the layout and this guy.  This is a kitbashed U36C.  It is all Kato and sports BLMA grab irons, sinclair antenna, cab armrests, cab sunshades, various miscellaneous brass wire grab irons, coupler cut levers, BLMA MU hoses and brake pipe, windshield wipers, wheelslip cables and speed recorder cable on trucks and the custom built horn. I painted the black weatherstripping around the windows so it would stand out too. I like the way it turned out and can't wait to do the others.  I have plans for U33C's and the odd U34ch or two.

Scott, that's really sharp.

I've been working on a couple things. The N8B that I mentioned in the Snow Day thread, assembling some wheel works trailers and trying to come up with a good CR freight car color red paint (basically one that matches the Atlas color).

So far I'm pretty happy with Poly Scale's "Roof Red".
