Weekend Update 6 December 2009

With the baby back asleep, the cat on the radiator, and coffee in hand, I thought I'd kick things off for this week:


This is an SPSF (!) double plug door box car I'm working on.  Treatment so far includes a medium wash of india ink diluted in 91% isopropyl, floquil Rust on the trucks, and a wash on the roof of metalic silver craft acrylic diluted 2:1 in the same alcohol.  The silver was floated over the original brown roof of the car to simulate peeling paint:



I also floated some silver on the ladders and grab irons, and the brakewheel platform to simulate worn metal parts.

Not much for me.  Two new projects came in for the paint shop, and another box of decoder installations.  So I'll be busy, but not for me!

Made meaningful progress this week on an SD24B kitbash that's been languishing on the bench for nearly a year. It's at the point where it could be painted, even put the decoder in it. I'm still wrestling with the decision to shave the ladders on the long hood and replace with some "awfully close" BLMA boxcar ladders.

Worked a little on an eBay win, the Alco Models C855 mentioned a few weeks back. At least it runs, but the original box foam had disintegrated and the resulting powder is in every nook and cranny (and flange fillet!). It will take complete disassembly to make right.

Soldering skills were put to a test yesterday... moving a water heater.  ;D

I've been doing more work on the onetrak module, getting it ready for the BANTRAK show at the B&O museum ().

I've got the concrete slab cut and painted, as well as the various berms (excuse the pics, they were shot on my Droid):






I've also touched up the "island" building (replaced a window, glued the roof in), and today need to work on the steel structure in the left. I need to get to MBK though for more Goo and some paint for it (gotta love those holiday hours!).

I’ve been adding more details to the buildings along the back of the layout in the Denver area.  These will be weathered a bit more when I get the scenery done in the area they reside.


I added the details and figures on the loading dock.


This building has the back cut off.  It sits against the backdrop at an angle.


I added some more wire plumbing on the top and added a Gold Metal Models cage ladder.

F10 in progress. These were former GM&O F3s rebuilt in 1978 for use on the MBTA. The bump-out in the rear was used to house a Cat HEP generator.


Here is the rear end.


This will be a flanger as soon as I can find a means of making the blades.


I'm working on that Alaska F7 again. I wasn't happy with the paint last time so I stripped the model and started over. The separation line is a little jagged, but I will fix that latter.

You'll need some Boise Budds or 300/1300s to pull that with! Will it be in Easter Egg or the inverted maroon?
Oh, and is that ARR unit the one that had been on lease to MCER in the 90s?

Some nice modeling guys. I just got out of the hospital, but when I got home yesterday, flight2000's "package had arrived.

I bought that beautiful NS SD40-2 that he had listed. My modeling has consisted of admiring Brian's talent.

Outstanding looking model, the nicest one in my fleet.
