Tabby and I pawned the kids of on my parents on Thursday, so we had 4 days to our self. We went and stayed down in Boston and went to Jim Norton's show at the Wilbur Theater.


While down there I spent some time in the down and gritty burbs of north Boston taking research photos for the layout. It was daylight, and they were taken quickly. Not as bad as when Ed and I where in Philly taking photos though where a pimp and ho fight broke out on the side of the street.

Chuck pack arrived with a runner pack of 89' footers...first MT purchase in 4 years, and is now added to what is ending up being a nice TV train. Ordered some track, flex is on backorder, so switches should be here tomorrow. Been laying roads like crazy all over the layout, lots of hydrocal so I can get the beat to s*** looks of the city streets.

Stopped by Charles Ro on the way back and picked up some detail parts and another kick a$$ building for the layout, Downtown Deco's Blue Comet Manufacturing, which is going to become a nice 4' mill building for the layout.


We did the Tour de Chooch layouts on both days, and I got to see Dr Oxnards layout again after not having seen it in 3 years. Its in this months Model Railroader.

Whats nice about the tour is you get to visit several that have been published.

I also picked up PS3 and Modern Warfare2 for anys of youse whose wansta play!

I thought law enforcement typically stuck with names for the phonetic since the dawn of time, while U.S. military went with Nato shortly after WWII  ???

You guys are making me reach into my dusty 2-way radio shop memories (yes, I worked in a railroad radio shop for a while, too).

All of you are right. There are at least three phonetic alphabets in accepted practice in US law enforcement. "International" (NATO) is Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta. APCO (Association of Public Safety Communications Officials) is Adam, Boy, Charles, David. Pre-NATO aviation is Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog. There are zillions of others, but those are the three most common.

Plus there are local or situational variants of all of them.

IMHO APCO is a USELESS organization for Dispatch and Police/Fire/EMS...they are worse than most political PACs I have seen!  > I've delt with radio on both sides, behind a desk and in the cruiser, and I could do with out them! Thats just my opinion!  ;D

Had a contractor come in and install fiberglass insulation into the (empty) walls of our lovely house. Insulation - what a concept!

Then spent Wed/Thur/Fri/Sat/Sun patching the 140+ holes. ;D

On a down note was reminded that spray paint is a migraine trigger for the mrs, so scratching my head about my plans to start airbrushing ... :

I'm still at the Duct tape, cardboard, and plywood stage; which means no roadbed.






Looks like I'm off the island, especially afer what I did to my only 2 CR and 1 WM cars...

My 2 100 ton CR hopper and my 40 foot WM flat were traded to get a BAR, BN, B&M, RI, UP, and GN boxcars. The flat is kind of old for a 75-85 timeset, and IDK what conrail hoppers would be doing on the BN.

In MA, the state 911 board runs a dispatch academy that's closely associated with APCO. I tell you, what they teach in the classroom and what actually happens on the street and in dispatch couldn't be further apart.

That's just the way of the beast, sort of like Best Buy sales training videos.

I always said to the new officers when I was dispatching that I did not care what word they said, as long as it matched the letter they wanted it to stand for....as there was a Sgt who...um..used to say J, George quite a bit... Must have been French Canadian
