New Layout Room

About a year ago, I started thinking about how I could expand from my 12' x 12' room to something larger. In January 2007, I visited an Ops session at Michael Pennie's Penn Central layout (see Great Model Layouts 2007) and saw what a rather large layout could be.

I used the winter and early spring to start building mini scenes and scratchbuilding some of the structures I knew I would need. As soon as it warmed a bit, I broke ground on a plan to extend out the back of my barn. I wanted to follow the existing profile, so I was limited to 18' wide, but could make it as long as I wanted. As I set posts for the above ground structure, I finally stopped at 48'.

Below are some of the mini scenes and building progress. The locale for the new layout is central NC and includes the NS  mainline from around Greensboro to Salisbury. A center penninsula will include the shortline, Winston Salem Southbound and possibly the High Point Thomasville & Denton RR.

Thanks all. There are some good modelers (and Photoshoppers) on the Railwire and I hesitated posting anything. The bridges were the first scratchbuilts I ever tried. The 680 foot Yadkin bridge with highway bridge beside were built uncompressed. I wanted them to make a statement. The will be just before the entrance to the 28 foot Spencer Hump Yard.

Just out of curiousity.. maybe it's an optical illusion.. are those floor joists 2' OC?

I'm building a nearly identical addition onto my Sisters barn.. but not for a layout, unfortunatly

Yes. 24" O.C. The loft inside the barn was at 24", and I'm not planning on really putting anything upstairs, so I just stayed at 24. The floors are sheeted with Advantech 23/32" panels and are rated for 24" spans.

are the floor joists 24" too?   Not like you're going to have a ton of load there.. but they're usually 16" oc, at least around these parts

The floor joists look a tad light, too.  What are you spanning with them?  Is there a pier line under there we can't see?

I'm just thinking of the loads that will be applied considering the average size of model railroaders... ;D

Also, you need to expand on how you built this bridge...

I had to offset the beam. The 2 x 6 joists span 10' on one side and 8' on the other. The 8' side is right and the 10' side is a little light. Should have been 7". The joists are blocked every 48", the same as the second floor, with 23/32 tongue and groove Advantech flooring.

The bridge.
Don't know where to start. The Yadkin River bridge is 680' long by NS trackplans. Should have been 51" long, but I compressed it to 48" 

I just bought some Plastruct and started scaling off a couple pictures I had. I built it sections, 2 sections at a time and then adding the crossmembers.

Look closely at the concrete piers on one of the highway bridges... note the exposed rebar. That's the bridge I have to cross to get to my LHS.

whoa nelly... 2x6 spanning 10' on 24" centers?  you may want to consider another beam my friend!  Just curious, is that to code in your area?

I was thinking the same thing.  Little trains don't like bouncy floors...
I'd have gone 2x8 16" o.c.
Figure if you have a bunch of operators over, that can be quite a load...
I mean look at all the meat I had in my train room last week...

Boing Boing!  Yes that's going to be fun with little trains on tracks...  I wouldn't want 2x6's spanning more than about 7-8 feet at 450mm (17") centres...  I used 8 foot spans and 500mm centres on my deck outdoors but of course that's braced by hardwood planks on top and doesn't matter that it's a bit bouncy...
