New Layout Room

Do you guys build your benchwork out of 2 x 6s or 2 x 10s? I want to make sure it's solid enough.

The max span for No.2 2 x 6 on 24" centers is 9' 6". I am 1 1/2 inch over that. The floor is plenty solid. No boing here.

There's also no dead load on it yet... or live load, for that matter.  I believe current events in Minneapolis would give one pause before one engineered something to the lowest common denominator...

But as they say on Train Board, "Its' your railroad, do what ever you want!" ;D

I think 2x10's for benchwork is a bit much, you should have saved the overengineering for the building    You can get by with 2x4 legs, and a mix of 1x4 and 1x3 for your benchwork and it should be pretty solid.  Or 2x4 legs and beams, with 1x4 "joists" to support your risers.

I haven't seen a track plan so it's hard to say without knowing the general layout plan.  Are you planning on having legs, or are you trying to keep them to a minimum?  What I mean is, some people build triangular supports from the walls, to keep the under layout area as open as possible.  Also, that way the layout is supported from the walls and independant of your bouncy floor

Thanks. Since these were posted, I have finished the building, all the benchwork, the helix, the lighting, the first 100 feet of track and begun landscaping.

Despite the dire warnings of those earlier in this thread there is no "boing boing" to the floor and no little trains crashing because of mini-earthquakes.

Can't wait to see it in person.  Your framing looks better than many 'professionally' done houses I've wired.  It seems to me that a lot of the flooring here in eastern NC is 24" off center, although thicker joists would have been better.

Yeah, I need to update the website. When I was building my previous layout, I got to the point where I needed to name things for notes and plans, etc. Was looking thru some books I had when this book on the Andy Griffith show jumped out at me. It had pretty much everything I needed as far as town and building types. I had to take some poetic license with the names though, the Glacier Gravel kit became the Ernest T. Bass Gravel Company, the DPM Gripp's Luggage kit became the Miracle Salve Company.

It was a good learning experience and I pulled that layout in pieces and donated it to a local guy who is setting up a model train "museum" where he will have an open house once a week or so.

The new room is based totally on the prototype NS Piedmont Div and the Winston Salem Southbound.
