Bachmann 2-6-0 prototype

Randy we all remember how bad we felt when Mark ripped that motor apart to see it's inner workings when he disassembled the bachmann ten wheeler don't we?

BTW these motors are avialble from Bachmann as service parts now (inside the chassis halves).  I was impressed after Victo torture tested his ten wheeler for 400+ hours straight.

Oh, wow, yeah...THAT motor.       Forget I ever posted, no need to go there!

I don't have a 4-6-0 so that never sunk in.  At this moment I'm just glad I didn't invest a ton of money on devolping an Atlas conversion kit for a modern, small, 2-6-0 on the Atlas drive.  Bachmann already got me once with the 70-tonner.

I'm pretty sure the Kato 11-105 critter chassis and the Bachmann 44/70 tonner share the same motor, just the Bachmann version has double shafts.  I have all, have tested all, run all hard, and have been impressed by them despite the design and size as well.

The standard small motor in the Tomytec chassis - and reportedly also in the Bachmann 2-6-6-2, is another matter though.  I've had several of those go bad.

Hi Victor, the motor is included in the chassis and I already have two.

I was impressed with the lenth of the torture test.  I can't remember the number of hours but it was somewhat significant in the 400+ arena?

So one could run this loco at 100 train shows at 4 hours apiece, or run it on a mantel for 16 days straight, etc.  In my mind that loco should last forever for the average user who is not going to run it constantly.  I cannot remember how many cars you were pulling on the level, 12?

I also remeber people commenting on its smoothness and slow running capabilities.  Were you not impressed?  I can't recall your reaction it; it may have been veiled so as not to imply any bias.

Another question on this.  Erie Chris is probably best qualified to answer this one as he is a confirmed DC user.  The decoder on this one does not have any allowance for modification to operate on DC only, as did the decoder in the ten wheeler.  How did you get around the decoder on this one?  Did you simply take it out and re-fasten wires, similar to what is required for the seventy and fourty four tonners?  Did you have to splice in wires?  Or did you even bother?

I think it runs on DC as is, but you know me, yeah I tore all that crap out.    First I kept the light board up front, but I clipped the light wires from it. The other 2 wires stayed because they screw into the frame haves. I jumped those wires to the motor wires and then ran the 2 wires to the tender. I added some simple plugs inside the tender in case I wanted to take it off.


If you want the working light you can keep it. And I guess once you wire the motor to the frame you no longer need wires running to the tender, the drawbar will do that. But I just figured I'd use the wires and then be able to shorten the drawbar.

I remember questions about the voltage of this motor when the 4-6-0 came out,
and a possible resistor on the board to protect it.
I don't recall the outcome- was it determined to be 12 volts ?

I tried searching here & there before I ask, but didn't turn up the answer.
When I gave mine a smaller tender, I dumped the decoder & kept the rest
just-in-case...

Hi Chris333,

for all I was ever able to see using a DDM the motor does get supplied close to track voltage.


that does not mean that the decode can't give the motor protection.
another way to say that is the decoder could be limiting the current to the motor.

frankly I doubt the decoder has that programming built in.
that would make the decoder 'special' and more expensive.

I'll leave it I guess. It runs great, nice and slow and I can't imagine myself cranking up to full speed. I did the same thing with my 4-6-0.

Wow,even including the "whole board" with the decoder, that thing is pricey.
Had I been sure the motor was 12 volts, it would have been a lot easier to just
remove it all,but back then it wasn't worth the risk-and no parts then at any price.
And while I'd never open up the throttle either, I run on a club/n-trak set up
and odd things can & do happen there...
