Heh heh.. why?  Because they are always out of gauge?  Shifted to one side?  Bind in the sideframes?

I know, they are a pain.  But as long as Kato isn't making any, they are the only game in town.

All of they above then pour on a thick helping of their appearance. They are fugly and it's embarrassing to use them.

No, because the are either models of some fantasy truck or some very rare truck which was only used on very few tenders.  The other problems are easily overcome.

At least Bachmann didn't put a blatantly incorrect tender on this model like they did on the "as built" USRA Heavy Mountain ...

While I think some of the NS 2-6-0s were rebuilt with Walshaerts gear; I know the ten wheelers where.  However, the NS steamers were mostly Baldwins

I like mine. Yes all the ternder wheels were out of guage (too narrow). But that was a quick fix. It runs very well and quite. I did notice the DCC slow speed option needs to be changed per Spookshow too. But now we have another nice small steamer that runs well and is DCC out of the box.

And now I have another engiine to convert to PRR

We got ours at the shop Friday. Naturally the only one short in the order was the PRR version which is the one I ordered. I figured it would be a good stand in until I get around to making it a bit more pennsy.

I brought home a CN version to test and use for the review in the Ntrak Steam book. Haven't gotten a chance to fire it up yet but it is a well done little loco, even if we can't find an exact prototype. I hate to use this term but it is "cute". The small tender is perfect for the loco and I can only hope later versions of the ten wheeler get converted to this tender. Proto or not, it will look good handling a small local freight or mixxed passenger train. I can't find anything even close in B&O so I will have to look to PRR or C&O for inspiration when I get mine.

I also hope that Bachmann will make that new small tender available for sale as a standalone item. But after hearing how poorly they did selling the other tenders, I'm not holding my breath.

BTW - Another close but not quite. It has the right valve gear and tender, just too many steam domes.

The thing that bothers me waaay more, however, is the drivers. If only they could have opened up the spokes, or at the very least deepened the relief a little more, I would like their otherwise very nice locos a lot better. But those drivers just really annoy me.

You and me both!  I started a rant on the Atlas forum about the Bachmann drivers (on all their  recent steam locos) looking toyish (while most other companies manage to model open spokes) but it seems that most modelers (at least on the Atlas forum) didn't think it was a big deal.  We seem to be a small minority. To me, those look like something you would find on a crude childs's toy. Other than that, Bachmann steamers are quite well detailed. Go figure...

Here is a photo comparison. Funny, the lighting in the photo actually makes the Bachmann driver look better than it looks like when viewed in-person: a flat and featureless wheel center with flat spokes.

Peteski, great line-up. We ought to flesh it out with more examples. For instance, I was deeply disappointed to see the forthcoming Atlas American has drivers nearly identical in design to the B'Mann American, which IMO are possibly the worst drivers made in N scale--made worse by being bright red!





In the case of the Atlas American (lower image), they went to the trouble of pad-printing minuscule gold stars on the axle ends of their Disney model; if the spokes could not be opened up, why not make the casting black, then pad-print the spokes red?

As you say, go figure.
