Locomotives that really need to re-release

I'd go for the previously suggested NW-2, preferably Kato, but I'd settle for Bachmann (I'm happy with my S4).  Someone suggested an H10-44 or H12-44, which, while not a re-release, would be great.  All of the above in SF zebra stripes, please.

And... while they aren't that hard to find... yet... a run of Kato ATSF Warbonnet F-7s.  I have a small army of early releases, that at this point are 30+ years old (including one F-3 from their first batch in 1987, that will celebrate its 40th birthday next year).  While they still run, I don't have enough 'revised' trucks to retrofit them all, and lit numberboards would be nice.  So, maybe it is time to retire some of them.

Could Atlas release an upgraded SW1500 from Micro Trains?

Yes. As well as a SW1504.

It's been 15 years since the last Bachmann Doodlebug production run and I have two custom painted DOA's impatiently waiting for an updated chassis with sound and less failure prone gears.

If we're asking for new stuff, the N scale steam engine that desperately needs an all new version is the USRA 0-6-0. One designed for DCC and that looks good.

I know that the SW1504 is a couple feet longer than the 1500, but would it be possible to swap a set of Kato Bloomberg trucks onto their SW1500 to get you "close enough"? Or are there other spotting differences to spoil the illusion?

Nah. Compared with modern releases they really show the age of their tooling. Kato would have to redo EVERYTHING on them to fix the issues, from the squinty number boards to the too low ride height. I have a handful and while I contemplate more SD40 projects I'll just wait for the inevitable one from Atlas that will at least have the things that are HARD to fix right.

Let me offer my 2 Cents Worth:  The Heavy Mountain 4-8-2       in all of its iterations and road names. It was truly a solid performer. That said, I am hesitant to add to the list:  the Bachmann light 2-10-2. It had major problems with the crankpin hole cracking and throwing the rods off the wheel in a catastrophic jam of the whole driver mechanism. If Bachmann re-release this model: let them check out the plastic/heat co-efficient used in the crankpin holes and gears in the drive-train. The 4--8-2 Heavy Mountain is a star performer. The 2-10-2 Light Loco needs to be re-worked again to be on the same level as the Heavy 4-8-2 Heavy Montain. Just my two cents worth; and others can disagree.Xh
